Observed annually on May 1 International Workers' Day commonly known as Labour Day commemorates the historic struggle of workers for fair wages reasonable working hours and safe working conditions.

On this occasion the Government of Sindh has declared a public holiday across the province today. All government and private institutions remain closed to mark the day.

The holiday is being observed by government offices, subordinate departments, autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under the provincial administration, while essential services continue to function as usual.

Separately, the State Bank of Pakistan has also observed a nationwide bank holiday with banking operations suspended for the day.

Labour Day traces its origins to the Haymarket Affair in Chicago, where workers in 1886 protested for an eight-hour workday. The demonstrations turned violent following a bombing, leading to casualties and the execution of several labor activists events that later became a symbol of the global struggle for workers’ rights.

In Pakistan Labour Day has been officially observed since 1973 during the tenure of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and is marked by rallies, seminars, and events highlighting labor rights and welfare.

As the day falls on a Friday this year the holiday extends into the weekend, providing a three-day break for employees in both the public and private sectors.
