In Karachi K-Electric Chairman Shaheryar Chishty has stated that the utility is fully prepared to cooperate with the Sindh government to improve electricity supply and address ongoing power-related challenges in the city.
He made these remarks during a meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah which was attended by K-Electric CEO Syed Taha, the Chief Secretary, the Secretary Energy, and other senior officials.
During the meeting the Chief Minister expressed concern over the current situation in Karachi noting that with the onset of summer, low-income areas are facing prolonged electricity outages, causing serious difficulties for residents.
He emphasized the need to reduce load-shedding, particularly in underprivileged areas, and called for a sustainable long-term solution.
In response, Chairman Shaheryar Chishty assured full cooperation from K-Electric in efforts to improve the power situation and enhance service delivery across the city.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also directed officials to conduct a detailed study on a targeted electricity subsidy program for consumers in Karachi. He stressed the importance of developing affordable and sustainable power generation models.
He further proposed utilizing Thar coal to produce low-cost electricity which could be supplied through K-Electric to low-income areas at subsidized rates with uninterrupted provision.
He also noted that the government is working on a partnership framework with K-Electric to ensure reasonably priced electricity for industrial zones.
The Chief Minister instructed the Energy Department to prepare multiple viable proposals aimed at improving affordability and access to electricity across the city.
According to the official statement, a special committee has also been formed, comprising the Karachi Commissioner, the Secretary Energy, and the CEO of K-Electric. The committee will submit recommendations to ensure reliable and affordable electricity supply in Karachi’s low-income areas.
