KARACHI: Sindh Inspector General (IG) of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon has announced heavy fines for motorists driving without a valid license.
Speaking at a ceremony in Karachi, IG Memon said that authorities had initially considered fines of up to Rs100,000 for unlicensed drivers, but the Sindh government directed police not to impose such a high amount.
Under the new fine schedule, motorcyclists without a license will now pay Rs20,000, car drivers will pay Rs30,000, and heavy vehicle drivers will face a Rs50,000 penalty.
The police chief shared that around 300,000 people in Karachi have already obtained online driving licenses. He stressed that without improving the licensing system, Karachi’s traffic problems cannot be solved in the long run.
Meanwhile, the city’s traffic police have entered the second phase of their awareness campaign ahead of the launch of the new e-challan system. Digital cameras will record traffic violations, and automated challans will be mailed to violators’ homes. Citizens will also be able to check their challans on the official traffic police mobile app.
To raise awareness, traffic police and advertising companies have teamed up to display traffic safety messages at more than 100 locations across Karachi, including billboards, signboards, and streamers. Informative videos and images will also be shared to educate the public.
Authorities have urged citizens to follow traffic laws to avoid heavy penalties and ensure safer roads for everyone.
