Researchers at University of California San Diego have found that combining meditation with mind-body practices can quickly bring noticeable changes in brain activity and blood biology.
The study showed that these practices activate natural processes in the body that are linked to brain flexibility, metabolism, immune function, and pain control, offering scientific support for wellness methods that were previously hard to measure.
The research, funded by the InnerScience Research Fund, followed 20 healthy adults during a seven-day retreat led by Joe Dispenza. Participants attended lectures and completed around 33 hours of guided meditation.
The results showed clear mental and neurological changes. Researchers noticed a reduction in internal mental noise, which suggested better focus and improved brain efficiency.
Brain activity after the retreat was similar to patterns seen with psychedelic substances like psilocybin, indicating that meditation alone can create deep altered states of awareness. Participants also reported strong feelings of connection and unity, with the most intense experiences linked to better coordination between different parts of the brain.
The study also found improvements in neuroplasticity. Blood samples taken from participants supported the growth and connection of lab-grown neurons. At the same time, metabolism became more flexible, the immune system responded in a more balanced way, and levels of natural pain-relieving chemicals increased. There were also measurable changes in gene and RNA activity related to brain function.
Researchers said these findings show that mind-body practices can affect both the nervous system and overall body processes. Future research will look at whether these techniques can help treat chronic pain, mood disorders, and immune-related diseases. While long-term effects are still being studied, the research highlights that regular meditation can lead to deep mental calm, stronger connections in the brain, and real biological changes.
