Mexico: At least 10 people have been killed and more than 60 injured after a freight train collided with a double-decker passenger bus in one of the deadliest rail-related accidents in Mexico in recent years.
The tragedy occurred early Monday morning, September 8, on a highway between the city of Atlacomulco in the State of Mexico and Maravatío in Michoacán.
According to police and the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico, the accident took place in an industrial area where the bus was reportedly navigating heavy traffic and crossed onto the railway tracks.
Preliminary reports indicate that the train, traveling at high speed, struck the middle of the bus, dragging it along the tracks before throwing it off. Among the deceased were seven women and three men.
Authorities noted that the crossing had no barriers or warning signs, and other vehicles had also crossed the tracks moments before the crash. The absence of safety infrastructure is now under scrutiny as investigations begin into the causes of the collision and potential accountability.
Fatal bus and road accidents are not uncommon in Mexico. In 2023 alone, official data recorded over 12,000 accidents on federal highways, resulting in 1,900 deaths and 6,400 injuries, highlighting ongoing concerns over transport safety.
Local and federal agencies are continuing recovery efforts and have promised a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
