Pakistan and China have jointly hosted a United Nations Security Council Arria-formula meeting to discuss the effective and impartial implementation of Security Council resolutions.

The meeting focused on finding ways to improve compliance with Security Council decisions and strengthen the credibility of the UN system. Pakistan Permanent Representative (PPR) to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar, said unresolved disputes such as Kashmir and Palestine remain serious threats to international peace and security.

He stressed that Security Council resolutions are legal obligations, not just recommendations. According to him, delays in implementing these resolutions weaken the credibility of the Security Council and allow conflicts to continue for many years. Asim Iftikhar said prolonged inaction has contributed to humanitarian suffering in both Kashmir and Palestine. He also warned that selective implementation of resolutions damages trust in the international system.

During the meeting, UN Assistant Secretary General Khaled Khiari and International Crisis Group representative Richard Gowan briefed participants on the issue. Member states welcomed the initiative taken by Pakistan and China. They highlighted the importance of diplomacy, regular reviews, and effective monitoring to ensure that Security Council resolutions are properly implemented. Participants also emphasized that fair and impartial enforcement of Council decisions is essential for resolving conflicts and achieving lasting peace around the world.
