Earthquake halts Bangladesh vs Ireland test in Dhaka

Dhaka: A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Dhaka during the second Test between Bangladesh and Ireland at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, causing a brief halt to the match and sending players, officials, and spectators scrambling for safety.

The unexpected tremor created tense moments inside the stadium and was widely shared on social media.

According to Cricinfo, the earthquake occurred on the third morning of the match at 10:38 AM local time during the 56th over.

Players and match officials took shelter near the pitch for nearly three minutes, while staff and many spectators moved to safer areas. Those inside the five-story media center also evacuated temporarily.

The match resumed shortly afterward, though some fans hesitated to return to their seats due to lingering fear. Despite the disruption, Bangladesh had scored a commanding 476 runs in their first innings, highlighted by centuries from Liton Das (128) and Mushfiqur Rahim (106). Ireland, in reply, reached 252 for 8 wickets in their first innings.

The earthquake incident quickly went viral online, capturing the attention of cricket fans around the world and highlighting the unexpected challenges faced during live sporting events.
