Zoom’s revenue growth records historic lows

Zoom's revenue growth
  • Zoom, the video-conferencing app, is cooling off from its epidemic highs.
  • Recent extended trading saw a 7% decline in the company’s stock, and its revenue growth during that time period was only 8%.
  • The company’s operating costs rose by 51% to $704 million in the final quarter of its fiscal year.

As the video calling app fails to reach sales and annual profit targets despite diminishing demand, Zoom’s heydays might be coming to an end.

The conferencing app needs to take its competitors more seriously as it seems to be cooling off from its epidemic highs.

Recent extended trading saw a 7% decline in the company’s stock, and its revenue growth during that time period was only 8%, a record low.

It is clear that people are beginning to return to in-person meetings and competing programs like WhatsApp, Discord, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and others.

According to Kelly Steckelberg, the finance director of Zoom, the company’s business would probably experience a 7–8% reduction in the coming fiscal year.

Originally, Eric Yuan, a former Cisco executive, founded Zoom. Before the pandemic struck in 2020, few people had heard of the app.

However, as a result of lockdowns and people being confined to their homes, the company announced triple-digit growth. It swiftly overtook TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp as the highest-grossing apps of the year.

Operating costs for the corporation rose by 51% to $704 million in the final quarter of its fiscal year.

Compared to forecasts from the previous year, which ranged from $4.53 billion to $4.55 billion, its predicted annual revenue was between $4.39 billion and $4.40 billion.

Instead of forecasting an adjusted annual profit per share between $3.70 and $3.77, Zoom now projects one between $3.66 and $3.69.

RBC Capital Markets managing director of software, Rishi Jaluria, says:

“Wall Street obviously doesn’t believe it yet, so Zoom remains a “show-me” tale. The company believes there is a lot of opportunity and bigger growth ahead.”

As was already established, Zoom’s competitors are quickly catching up, and if the industry leader in video conferencing did not act quickly, it risked being left behind.

Zoom resolves security hole that let hackers root Macs

Zoom resolves security hole
  • Zoom just released an upgrade for its Mac platform application.
  • The most recent patch closes a critical security hole that could have given hackers full access to a Mac.
  • It appears that the Zoom application’s auto-updater program possessed root-level access to the system.

Zoom just released an upgrade for its Mac platform application. The most recent patch closes a critical security hole that could have given hackers full access to a Mac user’s system.

A critical security hole that allowed someone with bad intent to acquire root-level access to users’ Mac computers had to be patched, according to a report on the well-known cloud-based video conferencing service.

The hackers would then be able to take over their systems as a result. It appears that the Zoom application’s auto-updater program, which possessed root-level access to the system, was the source of this vulnerability.

Only a signature verification method was available for this software, and it was simple to trick it by giving your package a familiar file name.

In other words, a hacker may be able to force a downgrade in your program or otherwise trigger attacks. The developer and researcher of the Objective-See Foundation (OSF), Patrick Wardle, was the first to identify the security problem.

Zoom was alerted to this vulnerability by Wardle in December 2021. Though the patch also introduced another fault, the corporation has now formally resolved this problem.

However, Zoom soon repaired this as well, and Wardle discovered another flaw in the program that had also recently been addressed. Notably, Zoom’s platform for Mac systems has experienced security-related problems before.

The company also had to act swiftly to address a camera hijack vulnerability in 2019, which increased criticism of the program, particularly in 2020 when the app had a meteoric growth in popularity.

Snapchat: An unlikely new rival for Zoom

Snapchat
  • Snapchat is launching a web-based version of its mobile app.
  • Users will be able to make video calls from their laptops and desktops.
  • Users in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the U.S. will be able to access the app from launch.

Since its inception more than a decade ago, Snapchat has only been accessible via mobile devices, unlike many other social media networks.

However, the business unveiled a web-based version of the well-known messaging software on Monday.

Users should be able to freely switch between their phones and laptops while still being able to carry on chats on the platform.

However, the new desktop capability might also enable Zoom, an unexpected opponent, to challenge Snapchat (SNAP).

Despite being known for allowing users to exchange vanishing chats and photographs, or “snaps,” the business claims that video calling has grown in popularity on the app.

According to Snapchat, the app facilitates more than 100 million video calls every month with a maximum of 15 participants.

Now that consumers may join those calls from a PC, it is hoped that the service will be simpler and more enjoyable to use.

The concept is comparable to video calling services like Zoom (ZM), which became extremely popular during the epidemic, but Snapchat has some distinct selling advantages.

According to the company, users will be able to start calls more quickly and conveniently because they are already connected to friends and can see when others are online.

Soon, video calls on the web-based version of Snapchat will also support the company’s renowned photo lenses, which may give users the appearance of having freckles, dog ears, or other traits.

To encourage users to share photographs to pals, the web version of Snapchat opens directly to the camera. Users can open snaps or start a discussion by selecting one of the latest friend talks listed in a sidebar.

According to the firm, the web version won’t initially have all the features of the mobile app, such as the “Snap Map” where users can track their pals or the discover area.

A spokesperson for Snap, the parent company of the app, said in a statement: “With so many in our community spending more time online, whether it be for remote learning or working, streaming or just plain browsing — we saw a huge opportunity to make it easier for our community to stay connected throughout their day.”

Snapchat for the web forbids users from taking screenshots of chats or snaps in order to safeguard users’ security and privacy (the app alerts users if someone screenshots their chat or photo).

To prevent users from clicking away from the Snapchat window, the business also developed a “privacy screen.”

The launch occurs at a time when Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, is under pressure on Wall Street following the publication of a larger-than-anticipated loss in its most recent earnings report and the subsequent warning to investors that it had reduced its outlook for the upcoming quarterly due to a deteriorating economy.

Shares of Snap, which are expected to release second-quarter earnings this week, have fallen by 70% since the year’s beginning.

Snap unveiled Snapchat+, a new paid subscription service last month with the potential to increase its revenue.

The new $3.99 per month subscription option can be attractive because of the web version. All Snapchat users in Australia and New Zealand as well as Snapchat+ members in the US, UK, and Canada will have access to the web-based version of the app from launch.

Soon, subscribers to Snapchat+ in France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will be able to use the service.

Zoom will uplift time limit for free accounts on these dates

Zoom App

Good news for all the Zoom users as the famous video-conferencing application will be lifting the limit for free accounts worldwide.

Zoom has a 40-minute meeting limit on conference calls (with three or more members) made from free accounts but for the upcoming holidays and new year, the video-conferencing application has decided to gift something to its users.

Zoom users will be able to make unlimitedly long conference calls on the following dates:

December 17th to December 19th
December 23rd to December 26th
December 30th to January 2nd

Earlier, Zoom Video Communications declared that its gross profit margins are lessening due to the increase in the number of free users.

According to the details, shares of the company, which have risen about sevenfold this year fueled by the dramatic rise in demand in video conferencing for work, school, or socializing due to the coronavirus pandemic, fell 5% after the bell, in spite of positive fourth-quarter forecasts.

However, zoom scores some of its own data centers, but it also relies on cloud computing services from outside retailers such as Amazon and Oracle Corp, meaning it must tolerate costs for free users.

Those bills, driven in part by a jump in free users in the 3rd quarter as millions of students and teachers started new school semesters, pushed down Zoom’s gross profit margins to 66.7%, below analysts’ estimates of 72.1%, and its pre-pandemic average of around 80%.
