Tim Burton Reacts To Disney Characters Reimagined by AI In His Style

Tim Burton

Famous director Tim Burton recently expressed his views on the increasing popularity of Artificial Intelligence and its potential threat to the field of animation.

In a recent interview with The Independent, Burton was asked about a Buzzfeed article from July that utilized AI to reimagine Disney characters under his direction. He reacted enthusiastically, saying, “They had AI do my versions of Disney characters! I can’t describe the feeling it gives you. It reminded me of when other cultures say, ‘Don’t take my picture because it is taking away your soul.’”

The Buzzfeed piece featured beloved Disney characters from films like Frozen, The Lion King, Cinderella, Moana, Beauty and the Beast, and Hercules, among others, with a distinct resemblance to the animation style of Burton’s well-known 2005 movie, Corpse Bride.

While Burton acknowledged that some of the AI-generated versions were “very good,” he admitted that he didn’t particularly enjoy seeing his unique artistic style replicated in this manner.

He explained, “What it does is it sucks something from you. It takes something from your soul or psyche; that is very disturbing, especially if it has to do with you. It’s like a robot taking your humanity, your soul.”

Burton referred to his artistic work, including his drawings and writings across various mediums, as “a therapeutic thing” and a means of making sense of the world.

The utilization of AI in the Hollywood industry has sparked debates, with writers and actors seeking negotiations with major corporations to ensure their job security. AI has become a central point of contention in these discussions.

Jenna Ortega reunites with Tim Burton for Beetlejuice 2

Jenna Ortega
  • Reports confirmed that Jenna Ortega is interested in a role in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2.
  • Ortega, best known for her role as Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s recent series.
  • Beetlejuice received critical acclaim and grossed $74 million in North America.

Reports confirmed that Jenna Ortega is interested in a role in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2.

Ortega, best known for her role as Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s recent series reboot Wednesday, is in talks to play Lydia Deetz, the daughter of the original film’s star, Winona Ryder.

Jenna Ortega is working with Burton for the second time; he was an executive producer on Wednesday and directed four of its eight episodes. Michael Keaton will also return to play the title character.

Beetlejuice 2 had been in the works for some time at Warner Bros. before Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B officially boarded it in February of last year. The original ‘Beetlejuice’ revolves around Charles (Jeffrey Jones), Delia (Catherine O’Hara), and Lydia Deetz (Ryder), who live in a house that was previously occupied by the Maitlands (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis).

The Maitlands were killed in a car accident, but their ghost selves want to re-occupy their former home, so they hire Beetlejuice (Keaton), a “bio-exorcist,” to scare away the Deetzes.

Beetlejuice received critical acclaim and grossed $74 million in North America on a $15 million budget. According to reports, “Keaton pops up from his grave to liven things up when the antics pitting the good ghosts against the intruders become a trite cat & mouse game.”

A sequel was discussed in 2013, when Keaton confirmed that he and Burton were discussing it.

Burton said in 2014 that he missed the character of Beetlejuice, saying, “There’s only one Beetlejuice, and that’s Michael. There is a script, and I would love to work with him again. I think there is now a better chance than ever… I miss that character. There’s something that’s cathartic and amazing about it. I think it’s closer than ever.”

Ryder confirmed that Beetlejuice 2 would be appearing on ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’ in 2015.
