SCO Summit: An inclusive political settlement is best way forward in Afghanistan, says PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan has on Friday emphasized the need to utilize coordinated approaches for the resolution of regional issues including problems of Afghanistan.

Addressing the 20th SCO Summit in Dushanbe, Prime Minister Imran Khan stressed that a stable, secure and peaceful Afghanistan is vitally important for Pakistan and regional stability.

He said an inclusive political settlement is the best way forward in Afghanistan, along with ensuring the safety, security and protection of rights of Afghans.

“It is time for the world to stand with Afghanistan, as we know that the past Kabul government was running on 75% international aid,” he added.

The world should accept ground realities about Afghanistan, the premier maintained.

On Pakistan’s stance about the new Afghan government, the premier said, Islamabad respects the sovereignty of Afghanistan and we think that any decision regarding Afghanistan should be taken by the people of the country.

PM Imran further said, “Afghanistan is a country, which cannot be ruled from outside neither it can be left all alone.”

“The current situation in Afghanistan requires international cooperation, he added.

The premier also reminded the world about Pakistan’s sacrifices in the war against terror and the losses incurred to the economy due to the law and order situation.

“Pakistan played a key role in terror war and lost over 80,000 lives.”

He said terrorism is unfortunately linked with religion. “The SCO is an important platform for trade, investment and connectivity,” added the premier.

He said that the region facing global challenges and has been affected due to climate change and rising temperatures. The prime minister also highlighted Pakistan’s efforts towards these issues.

“We started the plantation drive across the country to improve the environment,” he said.

Moreover, On the sidelines of the SCO summit, PM Imran Khan, who had arrived in Tajikistan on a two-day official visit, has met with the presidents of Iran, Belarus, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)

Established in Shanghai on 15 June 2001, the SCO is an 8-member permanent inter-governmental trans-regional Organisation.

Pakistan became an SCO Observer in 2005 and a full member in June 2017 during the Astana SCO-CHS Summit.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has on Friday (today) arrived to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit at Nauroz Palace Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon welcomed Prime Minister Imran Khan at the start of SCO Summit.

He is leading the Pakistani delegation for the 20th meeting of the #SCO Council of Heads of State being held in Dushanbe.

The premier has on Thursday underlined the importance of intensifying structured political ties and fast-tracking trade between Pakistan and Uzbekistan.

During a meeting with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Dushanbe, Prime Minister Imran Khan stressed the need for operationalizing the Uzbekistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement and strengthening collaboration in the fields of education, culture and tourism.

Both the leaders also aimed at bilateral cooperation with a special focus on trade and economic relations and regional connectivity.

Emphasizing the importance of multi-modal connectivity, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s full support for the visionary Trans-Afghan Railway project and assured all possible support for its early realization.

Discussing the situation in Afghanistan, he further highlighted Pakistan’s efforts in support of a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan.

Imran Khan also stressed the importance of the international community’s positive engagement with Afghanistan to address the urgent humanitarian needs and stabilize the economic situation.

On the sidelines of the SCO summit, PM Imran Khan has met with the presidents of Iran, Belarus, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

“The prime minister has been invited by President Emomali Rahmon and this will be his third visit to Central Asia underlying Pakistan’s enhanced engagement with the region,” said the Foreign Office while announcing the visit.

Prime Minister Imran Khan meets his Tajik counterpart in Dushanbe

Prime Minister Imran Khan has on Thursday (today) held a meeting with his Tajik counterpart Kokhir Rasulzoda after his two-day arrival in Tajikistan to attend the 20th SCO’s Heads of State Summit in Dushanbe.

At the arrival, Prime Minister Imran Khan was received by his Tajik counterpart and was accorded a red carpet welcome at Dushanbe International Airport, Tajikistan.

Imran Khan will have bilateral meetings with other participating leaders on the sidelines of the SCO Summit.

After attending the moot, the Prime Minister will have the bilateral segment of the visit. His talks with Tajik President will cover the entire gamut of bilateral relations, especially enhancing trade, economic and investment ties with a particular focus on regional connectivity.

The two countries have earlier expressed a strong commitment to enter into a formal strategic partnership.

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the first meeting of the Pakistan-Tajikistan Business Forum for which a group of Pakistani businessmen will also visit Dushanbe.

The Joint Business Forum will catalyze growing trade and investment relations and promote business to business contacts between the trading communities of both sides. A meeting of the Pakistan-Tajikistan Joint Business Council will also be held on the sidelines.
