Royal Gun Salutes have been fired around London and the United Kingdom in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s 96th birthday today, April 22.
The Queen celebrates her birthday quietly with her family, as is customary. Royal Gun Salutes are fired at saluting stations in key locations throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland as a public acknowledgement.

The Band of the Coldstream Guards sang Happy Birthday at Windsor Castle to start Her Majesty’s special day. As the regiment assumed their duty as the new Windsor Castle Guard, they played beneath the castle battlements.
Coldstream Guardsmen are dual-role infantry soldiers who specialise in light duty activities such as reconnaissance, machine gun and mortar operations, and confronting enemy forces on foot and in light armoured vehicles. They have been guarding the Monarch for almost four centuries.
The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery (KTRHA) fired 41 rounds from six 13-pounder Field Guns from the First World War, each brought into position by teams of six color-matched Irish Draught horses, at 1200 hours. After that, the Scots Guards’ Band performed Happy Birthday. Due to Coronavirus limitations, it is the first time in three years that the Gun Salute for the Queen’s birthday may be held in such a public area.
Major Fran Sykes, Commanding Officer KTRHA said: “We are fortunate enough to have a special relationship with Her Majesty The Queen and very much look forward to participating in such a wide range of parades and pageants to mark her special jubilee”.
