Our sole focus is on the South Africa series, says Misbah-ul-Haq

Misbah

While talking to the media in a virtual presser, the Pakistan cricket team’s head coach Misbah-ul-Haq said that he is not worried about the future as he is only focusing on the South Africa series.

Haq accepted that the national team’s performance was poor in the previous matches played against the international teams, however, the home series against South Africa has given the team a great opportunity to prove themselves once again.

“Not satisfied with the performance and want to improve on that. Our sole focus is on the South Africa series and I’m not focusing on what will happen in the future,” Misbah said.

“I don’t believe that (my future) has anything to do with the South Africa series. I have always played cricket under pressure and you have to perform. Have always believed and learned to do well in the present rather than looking ahead,” he added.

The 46-year-old Misbah also told the reason why National High-Performance Center (NHPC) coaches Saqlain Mushtaq and Mohammad Yousuf are with the side.

“I have listened to different speculations regarding them. The main goal of calling Saqlain Bhai was to work with the new spinners and Yousuf Bhai was to see what batsmen are doing,” he revealed.

“People have made up impression that if three people (including Younis Khan) will tell them, they will get confused. There’s no such thing as we are trying to work together as if these players go back to NHPC, they know what areas need to be addressed.”

It should be mentioned here that Pakistan and South Africa will face each other to play two Tests in Karachi and Rawalpindi from January 26th.

Pak vs SA: I want players to give 100% without fear of any consequences, Babar Azam

Babar Azam

Ahead of the two-match Test series between Pakistan and South Africa, Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam wants his team to appear “fearless” and “aggressive”.

Speaking to Ramiz Raja recently, Babar Azam said that he wants players to give 100% on the ground without fear of any consequences.

“I want the team to play positive but aggressive and fearless cricket, especially in white-ball cricket if we want to challenge top teams,” he said.

“Usually we stop scoring runs if we lose one or two quick wickets and this is where I want the team’s mindset to change — even if you’ve lost two quick wickets, you must continue to add numbers to the scoreboard,” he added.

The captain went on to add, “I was struggling, especially with red-ball cricket but Mickey supported me and kept backing me, which gave me confidence. It also made me realise how important it is for a player to be backed by team management when he’s struggling.”

“I am going to apply the same. I will support my players,” he said.

Azam said further, “When you’re in the ground, you’re there for Pakistan and Pakistan should come first, [we are not] friends there. All your relations with individuals should be kept out of the ground.”

“South Africa Will Be A Serious Challenge For Us”

Earlier in a day, Batsman Azhar Ali has in his statement said, “South Africa is a very strong side”.

“Their bowling line-up is very strong – not only the fast bowlers but their spinners are also up to the mark, especially Keshav Maharaj.”

“They’re very seasoned and experienced so they’ll pose a serious challenge to our team. We will have to be our best against them.”

Azhar Ali further added, “Home condition is always beneficial for any team,”

“Our performances in the last two home series were very good and our batsmen are also in good form. They’ve been scoring some runs in the away series as well, individually, despite difficult conditions. Babar has also returned to the side and it will boost our batting line. I am confident that our batting will do well in the series against South Africa.”

Pak Vs SA: Former Cricketers Express Excitement

PakVsSA

Ahead of the Pakistan-Sout Africa Test series, former Pakistani cricketers have shown their excitement as the visitor team came to the country after more than 13 years. The series will begin on Tuesday, 26 January.

Here is what all the former cricketers have to say ahead of the Test series:

Younis Khan:

“After the Test tours by Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, the tour of South Africa is a magnificent occasion indeed. National Stadium is my home ground and I have played here for a long time, the conditions and pitch will suit Pakistan. South Africa also has some quality players which makes for a competitive series.

“Young Pakistan players who will play Test cricket on home soil will have a lot to gain from this experience, they will learn the nuances of the longest format and their confidence will also grow.”

Mohammad Yousuf:

“South Africa’s trip is a big milestone for cricket in the country, Pakistanis love cricket and it is their greatest passion. There is a lot of interest in Test cricket and I have some very fond memories of playing Test cricket all over the country.

“I am confident that the fans will enjoy a great series as both teams will enter the series with adequate preparation and planning. South Africa possesses experienced players but we have the advantage of playing at our home grounds. The Pakistan squad is well aware of the conditions at the National Stadium and even the new players inducted in the squad have rich experience of playing first-class cricket at the venue.”

Umar Gul:

“This is a significant series in terms of the homecoming of cricket as South Africa is one of the top cricketing nations. I remember the 2007 Karachi Test which South Africa won against us as I was part of the Pakistan team. I am backing the Babar Azam-led team to win this Test and better our record against South Africa at one of our favorite Test venues.”

Abdur Rehman:

“South Africa playing again at the National Stadium has brought back some wonderful memories of my debut Test in 2007. For me performing against them in my debut Test was nothing short of a dream coming true. In the present squad, spinners Mohammad Nawaz, Nauman Ali, and Sajid Khan have considerable experience of first-class cricket.

“The trio has played a lot of cricket this season at this venue and know well about the conditions and the pitch. The spinners along with Yasir can really trouble South Africa; Yasir will be the linchpin of the bowling attack.”

Faisal Iqbal:

“In these challenging times, the tour of South Africa is an extremely encouraging step. I strongly believe that the successful delivery of PCB’s domestic season even with the Covid-19 challenges helped a lot with this tour.

“I was part of the team that played the 2007 series against South Africa and at present, it is a matter of pride for me that I am one of the selectors that have chosen the squad for this tour besides my role as head coach of Balochistan.”

Taufeeq Umar:

“South Africa’s tour is a very encouraging development and I am looking forward to what should be a keenly contested series. This series will help bring more Test cricket to Pakistan. Both teams are balanced and we are in for a thrilling series, I wish Pakistan the very best, I believe we have the squad that can prevail in the Test series.”
