PM Imran Khan urges international community to support Afghans

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan underscored that a peaceful, secure and stable Afghanistan was vitally important for Pakistan and regional stability.

In a telephonic conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the premier said that besides ensuring safety, security and protection of rights of Afghans, an inclusive political settlement was the best way forward.

“The international community must stay positively engaged in support of the people of Afghanistan, to help address the humanitarian needs and ensure economic sustenance,” PM Imran was quoted as saying.

He underscored the importance of coordinated approaches in addressing the evolving situation and noted that Pakistan attached high importance of the role of the Troika Plus format.

Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed satisfaction at the upward trajectory of Pakistan-Russia relations, with increased high-level exchanges and growing cooperation in diverse fields.

He reiterated the government’s resolve to strengthen trade relations as well as bilateral collaboration in the energy sector, including early realisation of the Pakistan Stream Gas Pipeline Project.

The two leaders agreed to closely cooperate within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) for promoting regional peace and security and also exchanged views on bilateral relations.

The premier reiterated his invitation to president Putin to visit Pakistan.

Putin, Xi Jinping discuss Afghanistan

The Russian president also spoke to his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping and stressed over the need to prevent instability from spreading to other parts of the region.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin exchanged views on Afghanistan in a call, a day after leaders of the G-7 countries met to discuss the crisis.

Xi urged all parties in Afghanistan to build an open and inclusive political framework, implement moderate, stable policies and cut ties with all terrorist groups.

Pakistan, Russia Looking Forward To Deepen growing bonds

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is on a two-day official visit to Pakistan and was received by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi along with his delegation at the airport.

The Russian Foreign Minister will visit Foreign Office (FO) on Wednesday to hold delegation-level talks.

During the talks, views will be exchanged on bilateral cooperation in diverse fields, promotion of economic collaboration, important regional and international issues and matters of mutual interest.

Moreover, Sergey Lavrov will help promote bilateral relations between the two countries.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi in his Tweet said, “Pakistan and Russia share a multi-faceted relationship and we welcome FM Lavrov’s visit in line with our mutual commitment to further strengthen our bilateral ties, deepening our growing bonds of cooperation & collaboration.”

He said both the countries desire to promote cooperation in the region and also to take forward the North-South Gas pipeline project.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi further said the two countries are playing their role in the Afghan peace process.

Furthermore, the Foreign Office in a statement said that the Russian Foreign Minister will also call on Prime Minister Imran Khan.

FM Qureshi Met Sergey Lavrov In 2020

Previously, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi met Foreign Minister Lavrov on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Bishkek in June 2019 and the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting in Moscow in September 2020.

Pakistan and Russia enjoy friendly and cooperative relations based on mutual respect, trust and understanding. Bilateral cooperation is growing across a wide range of areas of common interest including in security and defence, counter-terrorism, and the Afghan peace process.

Over the recent past, deepening collaboration in economic, trade and energy sectors has been the focus of the two governments.

The visit of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will contribute to further deepening of the multifaceted bilateral relationship and enhancing mutual understanding on regional and global issues.
