LHC orders amendment in rules to retain father’s name in women CNIC

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court(LHC)  has ordered that the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports amend the rules to retain the father’s name on the Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) of women.

The Lahore High Court has directed the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports to complete the amendment in three months in the laws allowing women to have their father’s name on the CNIC and passport.

Justice Asim Hafeez pronounced this order on the petition filed by Mehr Bano Langrial.

The petition stated that a married woman has the right to have her father’s name on her identity documents.

It is to mention that as per the NADRA policy, a married woman is free to decide if she wants to retain her father’s name in the “father’s name” column on the CNIC, irrespective of her marital status.
