Keira Knightley recently opened up about the challenges she faced with body image and media scrutiny during her time in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

The actress, who was just 17 when she starred as Elizabeth Swann in The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), revealed how the massive success of the films brought intense pressure and public shaming.

“In that classic trauma way, I don’t remember it,” Knightley shared with The Times of London. “There’s been a complete delete, and then some things will come up and I’ll suddenly have a very bodily memory of it because, ultimately, it’s public shaming, isn’t it?” She added, “It’s obviously part of my psyche, given how young I was when it happened. I’ve been made around it.”

Knightley faced harsh criticism, including baseless accusations of having an eating disorder. Reflecting on one particularly troubling moment, she recalled being asked during a press tour about one of the Olsen twins’ struggles with anorexia: “I remember sitting there just being like, ‘Wow, this is wild.’ Can you imagine? That made me really emotional.”

While the franchise launched her into stardom, Knightley admitted it left her with mixed feelings. “It’s a funny thing when you have something that was making and breaking you at the same time.” Despite the challenges, she acknowledged feeling “unbelievably lucky” for the support from family, friends, and “lovely boyfriends” that helped her navigate the storm.
