The horrific Lahore motorway rape incident, which took place on Tuesday night, when a woman was traveling with her children was robbed and gang-raped by two men.

One of the two suspects of the motorway rape incident, Waqar ul Hassan, today has surrendered and denied his charges before Lahore police.

Suspect’s DNA matches with woman’s sample

A breakthrough occurred on Saturday in the Lahore motorway gang rape incident when the sample of DNA of one of the suspects matched with the samples taken from the victim.

According to the details, the suspect’s DNA sample was already present in the Forensic Science Agency’s DNA bank. Police said that the suspect has a criminal record and that important progress has been made in the case, however, no arrests have been done yet.

IG Punjab dismisses reports of any arrest

Earlier, the Inspector General (IG) of Punjab police, Inam Ghani had dismissed reports that a suspect in the Lahore Motorway gang rape case has been arrested.

He added that he would share the news of any arrest himself as he is directly monitoring the investigations.

“Such unconfirmed news affects the case and is also misleading for the public,” he said. He also said that pictures of the woman and the suspect of the case being shared on social media were fake. He requested the media to confirm facts before reporting on such sensitive issues.

IG Punjab Refused To Defend Victim-Blaming Comments By CCPO Lahore

Inspector General IG Punjab Inam Ghani on Saturday refused to defend the victim-blaming comments by Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Umar Sheikh on the Lahore motorway rape incident.

Stressing that in “no way the victim can be blamed for the horrific event”, IG Punjab said: “[The] guard cannot tell the owner of the house to protect their belongings themselves.”

Meanwhile, Law Minister Raja Basharat had also termed the CCPO’s statement ‘inappropriate’ and maintained that he does not approve or agree with whatever the CCPO had earlier said.

Motorway rape incident: CM Punjab to chair investigation committee meeting

(Motorway rape incident) Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Usman Buzdar will chair a meeting of the investigation committee formed to probe into the Lahore motorway gang-rape incident.

The chief minister will review the progress of the investigation into the motorway rape incident in the meeting which will be attended by the provincial law minister, chief secretary, inspector general and other officials.

It is pertinent to mention here that the provincial authorities had released Rs50 million funds to the Punjab Forensic Science Authority (PFSA) over the directive of CM Usman Buzdar for completing the DNA tests of the suspects.

According to sources, Lahore’s Capital City Police Office (CCPO) will also appear before the investigation committee to clarify his statement regarding the gang-rape incident.

CCPO Lahore ‘inappropriate’ victim-blaming remarks

CCPO Lahore landed in hot water after he put the blame on the Lahore motorway gang-rape incident. In his remarks, the CCPO wondered why the woman took the route to travel and said that she should have checked her petrol tank before getting on the said route.

The CCPO is set to lead the investigation of the gruesome incident.

Sheikh had said that the woman had left Lahore’s Defence area at 12:30am for Gujranwala.
