Michelle Trachtenberg, the beloved actress known for her roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl, has passed away at the age of 39.
Police in Manhattan responded to an emergency call on Wednesday morning and found the actress “unconscious and unresponsive.” She was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that “criminality is not suspected” and that the medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
Trachtenberg, who gained fame as a child star in the 1990s and 2000s, was best known for playing Dawn Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Georgina Sparks in Gossip Girl. Her family’s representatives confirmed the news, stating, “It is with great sadness to confirm that Michelle Trachtenberg has passed away. The family requests privacy for their loss.”
Tributes poured in from former co-stars. Blake Lively remembered her as someone who “did everything… 200%,” adding, “She was fiercely loyal to her friends and brave for those she loved.” Harriet the Spy co-star Rosie O’Donnell called her passing “heart-breaking,” adding, “I loved her very much. She struggled the last few years. I wish I could have helped.”
Former Buffy castmate James Marsters praised Trachtenberg as “fiercely intelligent, howlingly funny, and a very talented person,” saying she “died much too young.”
Her last major role was hosting the true-crime docuseries Meet, Marry, Murder (2021).
