  • It also addressed the controversy surrounding Emilia Pérez.
  • Netflix’s Chief Content Officer called it unfortunate.

Netflix has finally responded to the controversy surrounding Emilia Pérez, its top Oscar contender, and resurfaced racist tweets of Karla Sofía Gascón.

Speaking on The Town podcast, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria addressed the backlash, calling it unfortunate. “I think it’s really a bummer for the 100 incredibly talented people who made an amazing movie,” she said. Despite Emilia Pérez earning 13 Academy Award nominations, many believe the scandal has affected its chances.

Bajaria emphasized that the situation has overshadowed the film’s achievements. “It really has kind of taken the conversation in a different way [from] this incredible movie that Jacques Audiard — who is an incredible director — has made. It really is a bummer for a lot of the people, like [co-stars] Zoe [Saldaña] and Selena [Gomez].”

Regarding Netflix’s vetting process for social media histories, Bajaria admitted, “It’s not really common practice for people to vet social tweets that way… A lot of people are reevaluating that.” While acknowledging the logistical challenges, she added, “If you ask me today, everything I know, we would still buy the movie today. That movie is incredible and it’s creative and it’s bold.”

Gascón has apologized for her past remarks, but the controversy has impacted her reputation.

‘Emilia Pérez’ star Karla Sofía Gascón faces backlash over offensive tweets, issues apology

Karla Sofía Gascón
  • Karla Sofía Gascón is facing backlash after her past tweets resurfaced.
  • The tweets are considered ‘racist’ and offensive by social media users.
  • The controversy erupted when old tweets from 2020 and 2021 resurfaced.

Spanish actor Karla Sofía Gascón, recently nominated for an Oscar for her role in Emilia Pérez, is being criticized after her past ‘racist’ and offensive tweets resurfaced. In response, she has issued an apology.

“I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,” Gascón told Variety. “As someone in a marginalised community, I know this suffering all too well, and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life, I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

The controversy erupted when old tweets from 2020 and 2021 resurfaced. One tweet about Islam, attached to a photo of a Muslim family, read, “Islam is marvellous, without any machismo… How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY,” as translated by Variety. Another tweet, posted shortly after George Floyd’s murder, stated, “I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug-addict swindler…”

Additionally, Gascón criticized the 2021 Oscars, writing, “More and more, the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films… an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration, or the 8M.”

Gascón remains in the spotlight for her acclaimed performance in Emilia Pérez, which also earned her the Best Actress award at Cannes.
