World Bank Lists Ehsaas Cash Programme Among 4 Top Social Protection Plans

The World Bank has ranked Ehsaas Cash Programme among the top four social protection interventions globally in terms of the number of people covered.

The report released by the World Bank said, “Ehsaas Emergency Cash Programme ranks fourth globally in terms of the number of people covered and 3rd globally in terms of percentage of population covered amongst those that covered over 100 million people.”

The report named “global social protection responses to COVID-19” is called the “living paper” and it presents a 650-page volume and providing documentation on how countries are dealing with social protection measures whilst the pandemic situation.

The report further says, “an exponential growth in social protection measures between March 20, 2020, and May 14, 2021, and that a total of 3,333 social protection measures have been planned or implemented in 222 countries or territories”.

It also added, “As far as the number of people and the percentage of population covered among countries where more than 100 million people benefited from the social programmes, the World Bank stated that select countries have attained impressive six-digit levels.”

Prime Minister Imran Khan has on Sunday felicitated Dr Sania Nishtar and his team after the World Bank lists Ehsaas Cash Programme in its top four global protection inventions.

In a tweet today, the premier congratulates his Special Assistant on Poverty Alleviation Sania Nishtar over the great achievement.

He said, “Congratulations to Sania and the Ehsaas team for achieving this milestone and well-deserved int recognition.”

Ehsaas Program: Govt to initiate nationwide drive for school enrollment

Aiming to minimize dropout rates, the Ehsaas Program has decided to start a nationwide drive for school enrollment soon in collaboration with the provinces and key development stakeholders.

According to the details, the plan was discussed during a maiden meeting of the Ehsaas steering committee for Waseela-e-Taleem Digital.

Dr, Sania Nishtar, who is the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation chaired the meeting.

“The programme targets will be aligned with results of Ehsaas National Socio-economic Registry survey that is currently 61% complete in the field and is expected to be conclude before June 2021 nationwide”, said SAPM Dr Sania.

Earlier, the Ehsaas program had benefitted around half of Pakistan’s population amid the coronavirus crisis last year.

An annual report was compiled by Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection Division according to which the Ehsaas program continues to empower the weakest segments of society through its multi-faceted initiatives.

The report also mentioned that many transformative initiatives and policy reforms had effectively been implemented nationwide since the launch of Ehsaas as an umbrella program in 2019 by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Ehsaas Program: PM directs to prepare comprehensive strategy for expansion

Prime Minister Imran Khan has on Monday (today) directed to prepare a comprehensive strategy to further expand Ehsaas Program.

The Prime Minister was informed that the World Bank has doubled its assistance for Ehsaas Program which will help extend social protection to more deserving people.

He held a meeting with Special Assistant on Poverty Alleviation Sania Nishtar and Country Director World Bank Najy Benhassine in Islamabad today.

The Country Director World Bank declared the Ehsaas Program a flagship program of social protection and a role model for other countries.

Najy Benhassine also appreciated the steps taken by the Prime Minister for environment protection.

He said the Prime Minister announcement of shifting to environment friendly renewable energy resources to produce electricity is a highly responsible initiative to save the region from the harmful effects of climate change.

Earlier, the World Bank had pledged to provide $19.8 million aid to Pakistan for the country’s response, recovery, and resilience in the education sector amidst the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

The project of World Bank aims at strengthening federal and provincial actions towards the education sector so a proper response can be concreted and to support the country’s short term recovery in this sector from the COVID-19 crises.

Moreover, Prime Minister Imran Khan had addressed that Country Strategy Dialogue (CSD) on Pakistan, organized by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in recognition of the country’s commendable resilience to the myriad of challenges.

Detailing about the Ehsaas Programme, the premier had said that 15 million families were given cash handouts and it really saved Pakistan from the worst effects of lockdowns.

“Because the people were with us, they complied with our measures we came out of it better than any other country,” the premier said.

He further added that we saved our economy and we save people from dying from the virus.
