KARACHI: In September, almost 215,000 cases of watery diarrhea were reported among youngsters in Sindh, the highest number this year so far.
According to figures issued by the health department on Saturday, 891,915 cases of diarrhea were reported in the province this year. In September alone, 219,707 cases were reported, including 103,139 in children under the age of five and 116,568 in individuals over the age of five. Last month, the sickness took the lives of eight people.
According to the statistics, the province, which had already been plagued by watery diarrhea cases since January, saw an increase in the number of cases as unusual monsoons hit most districts.
Experts have also linked the high frequency of diarrhoeal infections to heatwaves, as the germs that cause these illnesses spread more easily in hot weather. Also, they claim that during hot summer days, water usage soars and that potable water is unavailable to the masses, particularly in flooded areas of the province.
In March, the province reported 19,323 diarrhea cases in children under the age of five; in April, 53,258 cases; in May, 48,960 cases; in June, 47,023 cases; in July, 49,368 cases; and in August, 99,629 cases.
In Sindh this year, a total of 471,215 cases of diarrhea were reported in children over the age of five, with 17,957 cases reported in March, 59,092 cases reported in April, 58,362 cases reported in May, 60,456 cases reported in June, 56,385 cases reported in July, and 102,395 cases reported in August.
According to health officials, the majority of these cases were now being recorded in flood-affected areas where people were suffering from hunger and disease.
