COAS discuss bilateral relations, security with Saudi deputy defence minister

COAS meets Saudi minister

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa, who is in Saudi Arabia on an official visit, held a meeting with the Kingdom’s Deputy Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations, matters of mutual interest, and military cooperation.

Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General Lt General Faiz Hameed, who is accompanying the army chief on the Saudi visit, was also present during the meeting.

Shortly after the meeting, the Saudi deputy defence minister tweeted: “[I] Met today with my brother, H.E. General Qamar Bajwa, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff. We discussed bilateral relations, military cooperation, and our common vision for preserving regional security.”

The army chief arrived in Riyadh on Monday and met the Saudi military leadership to discuss “military to military ties including training exchanges” according to the military’s media wing.

“Gen Bajwa was received by Saudi Arabia’s Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces General Fayyad Al-Ruwaili upon his arrival at the defence ministry,” ISPR had said.

Gen Bajwa had also met Lieutenant General (Staff) Fahad bin Turki Al Saud, Commander Joint Forces, Saudi Arabia.

“During the meeting, prospects for military cooperation and ways to support and boost it were reviewed, in addition to matters of common concern,” the Saudi government said in a statement.

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa will leave for Saudi Arabia on an official here on Sunday (today).

During the visit, COAS Qamar Javed Bajwa will hold important meetings with Saudi Arabia’s top civil and military leadership, said sources.

Bilateral ties, regional security situation, Kashmir dispute, international issues and other matters will be discussed in the meetings, the sources added.

Sources further added that his visit seeks to calm diplomatic strains over Kashmir as financial support for Islamabad hangs in the balance.

Moreover, the two countries are traditionally close and Saudi Arabia in 2018 gave Pakistan a $3 billion loan and $3.2 billion oil credit facility to help its balance of payments crisis.

Earlier on August 13, Director-General (DG) Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Maj. Gen. Babar Iftikhar had confirmed that the COAS will visit Saudi Arabia to discuss regional security and Kashmir dispute with the Saudi leadership.
