Georgians rally En mass for EU, urge government to quit

Georgians rally
  • Tens of thousands of people march in Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, demanding that the government step down.
  • Demonstrators angry over country’s failure to formally secure candidacy for EU membership.
  • EU leaders decided last month to postpone Georgian application for membership pending political reforms.

Tens of thousands of people marched in Georgia on Sunday, demanding that the government resign over the country’s failure to formally secure candidacy for EU membership.

Since late June, when EU leaders decided to postpone Tbilisi’s application for membership pending sweeping political reforms, the Black Sea nation has been gripped by mass protests.

The biggest demonstrations in decades, which saw at least 120,000 take to the streets on June 20, are being organised by leading pro-democracy groups and supported by opposition parties.

On Sunday evening, tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered outside Georgian parliament, blocking traffic at the main thoroughfare of the Georgian capital, Tbilisi.

Waving Georgian and EU flags, demonstrators sang the national anthem, before the EU anthem, the Ode to Joy, was performed at the rally.

Many held placards that read “We are Europe.”

On Facebook, the rally’s organizers earlier called on Bidznia Ivanishvili, founder of the country’s ruling party, to “relinquish executive power and transfer it, in a constitutional manner, to a government of national accord”.

A new cabinet “will carry out the reforms required by the EU, which will automatically bring us the status of an EU membership candidate,” the statement said.

“A next stage of our protests begins today. We will not disperse.”

Missile strikes kills 19 Ukrainians in Odessa

Ukrainians
  • Missile strikes hit an apartment building and a recreation centre in Serhiivka.
  • There was no immediate comment from Russia on the strikes. Ukrainian officials accuse Russian forces of shelling relentlessly the city of Lysychansk.
  • Ukraine is a major agricultural exporter in peacetime, but Russia’s invasion has damaged farmland and led to food shortages.

Missile strikes killed 19 people and injured dozens more in Ukraine’s Odessa region on Friday, a day after Russian troops abandoned positions on a strategic island, effectively ending the Kremlin’s invasion.

Two children were killed, and six others were injured, according to Ukrainian officials, just one day after US Vice President Joe Biden announced $800 million in new weapons for Kyiv at a NATO summit.

The missiles slammed into an apartment building and a recreation centre early Friday in the town of Serhiivka about 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of the Black Sea port of Odessa, which has become a strategic flashpoint in the conflict.

“The death toll is 19 people,” wrote Sergiy Kruk, head of the Ukrainian emergency services, on Facebook. Thirty-eight people were wounded, including six children, he added.

Kyrylo Tymoshenko, a senior official at the Ukrainian presidency, earlier put the death toll at 18, including two children.

Russia quits Snake Island, in blow to blockade of Ukraine ports

Ukraine ports
  • Snake Island became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance in the first days of the war.
  • It was also a strategic target, sitting aside shipping lanes near Ukraine’s port of Odessa.
  • Ukraine has begun to receive longer-range missiles and military gear from Western backers.

Russian troops abandoned their positions on a captured Ukrainian island on Thursday, a major setback to their invasion effort that weakens their blockade of Ukraine’s ports, defence officials said.

The Black Sea news came as NATO leaders concluded their summit in Madrid, intent on demonstrating their unity and determination to provide advanced weapons to Kyiv in the face of Moscow’s assault.

Snake Island became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance in the first days of the war, when the rocky outcrop’s defenders told a Russian warship that called on them to surrender to “go f*ck yourself,” an incident that spurred a defiant meme.

It was also a strategic target, sitting aside shipping lanes near Ukraine’s port of Odessa. Russia had attempted to install missile and air defence batteries while under fire from drones.

Now, however, Ukraine has begun to receive longer range missiles and military gear from its Western backers, and the Russian position on Snake Island seems to have become untenable.

“In the end, it will prove impossible for (President Vladimir) Putin to hold down a country that will not accept his rule,” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, stressing that any eventual peace deal would be on Ukraine’s terms.

“We’ve seen what Ukraine can do to drive the Russians back. We’ve seen what they did around Kyiv and Kharkiv, now on Snake Island.”

The Russian defence ministry statement described the retreat as “a gesture of goodwill” meant to demonstrate that Moscow will not interfere with UN efforts to organise protected grain exports from Ukraine.

But Kyiv claimed it as a win.

“They always downplay their defeats this way,” Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Twitter.

“I thank the defenders of Odessa region who took maximum measures to liberate a strategically important part of our territory,” Valeriy Zaluzhny, the Ukraine military’s commander-in-chief, said on Telegram.

In peacetime, Ukraine is a major agricultural exporter, but Russia’s invasion has damaged farmland and seen Ukraine’s ports seized, razed or blockaded — threatening grain importers in Africa with famine.
