Jackie Shroff reacts to ‘Baby John’ failure at box office

Baby John
  • Varun Dhawan’s Baby John failed to meet expectations.
  • Jackie Shroff shared his thoughts on its underwhelming performance.
  • He said that he feels bad, not for himself but for the producers.

Varun Dhawan’s highly anticipated action thriller Baby John, which was expected to dominate the Christmas box office, failed to meet expectations. Jackie Shroff, who played the antagonist in the film, recently shared his thoughts on its underwhelming performance.

He expressed empathy for the producers. “Dukh hota hai par khud ke liye nahi, producers ke liye (You do feel bad but not for yourself, but the producers),” he said in a conversation with India Today Digital.

When asked if a film’s failure impacts him, Shroff admitted that while actors do hope for appreciation, it’s the producers who face the brunt of the disappointment. “It is disheartening when the investment does not yield returns,” he explained, adding, “You tend to do your job with sincerity, but the people who have put in the money, you have to think about them too.”

A remake of Vijay’s hit Theri, Baby John made significant changes to suit Varun Dhawan’s character and the storyline. Despite its star-studded cast, including Rajpal Yadav, Wamiqa Gabbi, Sanya Malhotra, and Keerthy Suresh, and an action cameo by Salman Khan, the film grossed just Rs 59 crore globally on a Rs 160 crore budget.

While the box office numbers disappointed, Jackie Shroff’s perspective underscores the challenges and risks of filmmaking.

Varun appeared in an episode of Pinkvilla Masterclass and shared his two cents on how newcomers can impress directors and producers in Bollywood.

Dhawan emphasized the importance of visibility in today’s digital age. “Jo dikhta hai vo bikta hai (What is visible, does sell),” he remarked, encouraging aspiring actors to embrace social media.

“I believe you need to get yourself out there today for sure. It’s very difficult to stay behind the scenes and expect someone to notice you and bet on you,” Dhawan said. He added, “You have to get yourself at least a little bit out there.”

Citing a conversation with a close friend who hesitated to join social media despite a strong portfolio of ad work, Dhawan advised, “You’ve got to put it out so that if a director sees it, he’ll see a little bit of your work; he’ll take you.”

On the work front, Dhawan’s next film, Baby John, directed by Kalees, is set to release on December 25, 2024.

Varun Dhawan clarifies ‘Baby John’ is not remake of ‘Theri’

Varun Dhawan
  • Varun Dhawan confirmed Baby John is an adaptation, not a remake.
  • The film reimagines Tamil hit Theri with significant changes.
  • Varun said that the film deviates in terms of storyline and structure.

Bollywood star Varun Dhawan has clarified that his upcoming action thriller Baby John, directed by Atlee, is not a remake of the filmmaker’s Tamil hit Theri, but rather an adaptation. The movie, which revolves around a police officer and single father, stars Dhawan in the lead role alongside Keerthy Suresh, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Jackie Shroff as the antagonist Babbar Sher.

Speaking during a promotional discussion, Dhawan explained the creative choices behind adapting the film. “When Atlee came with this film, there was a reason behind it, and he said that we had to change a lot of the geography of the film,” he stated.

Dhawan emphasized that while the film draws inspiration from Theri, it deviates significantly in terms of storyline and structure. “We have to use it as an adaptation and not really a proper remake, and I think that’s what’s done. Like you see, a lot of the frames and a lot of the story angles are different,” he added.

Addressing fans’ expectations, Dhawan remarked, “If someone comes in expecting a book-by-book remake, they will be disappointed because that’s not what the film is. It’s an adaptation.”

Directed by Kalees, Baby John is slated for a Christmas release on December 25, following its postponement from May.
