KARACHI: Shanghai Municipal Government has presented a donation of Rs 21.7 million to Administrator Karachi Dr. Syed Saif ur Rehman for the improvement of Karachi’s infrastructure.

The Consul General of China met the Administrator Karachi Dr. Syed Saif ur Rehman in his office.

 

 

During the meeting, Administrator Karachi said that the Consul General of China has donated Rs 21.7 million for the infrastructure of Karachi on behalf of the citizens of Shanghai and the Shanghai Municipal Government.

He said that Karachi and Shanghai are sister cities. The friendship between China and Pakistan is eternal and the people of both countries have love and brotherhood for each other.

Saif ur Rahman said that Karachi and Shanghai will work together for the development of Karachi, and the money given by the Municipal Government of Shanghai will be spent on the development of Karachi.

Administrator Karachi said that the infrastructure of Karachi has been damaged after the rains. He said the donation is a gift from the citizens of Shanghai and the municipality.

He further said that China’s technical support will continue to be available to Karachi for the improvement of Karachi’s infrastructure.

Commissioner Karachi orders to demolish dilapidated buildings

Commissioner Karachi has ordered the demolition of dilapidated buildings in the city.

According to the details, Deputy Commissioner South has compiled a list of damaged buildings in Lyari and Saddar Town and ordered to take action in stages.

In Lyari, three buildings have been demolished in the last two days and more are being bulldozed.

In Karachi, dilapidated buildings and substandard constructions have become a serious threat to human lives.

The Sindh Building Control Authority has declared 49 buildings in Lyari as extremely damaged and dangerous.

According to the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), the total number of damaged buildings in Karachi at present is 422, of which the most damaged buildings are in the southern district with more than 300 which may meet any accident at any time.

Administrator Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Iftikhar Ali Shallwani earlier said that more than 400 buildings are in deplorable condition in the city, and notices were already issued to the inhabitants for evacuating the same.

Shallwani stated it was very sad that the people are dying in such incidents. According to a press statement from KMC, he said that strict action would be taken against responsible for the loss of human lives. “FIRs have been lodged against the responsible persons of previous collapses of buildings,” he added.

Building Collapse Incidents in 2020

Five buildings have collapsed in Karachi this year, killing more than 50 people.

February 2020

Earlier, in February a ground-plus-five storeyed residential building constructed on an 80-square-yard plot in Lyari’s Usmanabad developed cracks before tilting dangerously.

 March 2020

A building built on plots of forty yards was five storeys high. The owner was also constructing the sixth floor when the whole building collapsed which affected two other buildings as well.

June 2020

In June, a five-storeyed residential building located in Lyari’s Kalri area collapsed, killing more than 22 people.

September 2020

A four-storeyed residential building in Allahwala Town in District Korangi collapsed last Thursday, killing four people.

September 2020

The recent incident happened on September 13, when a two-storey building collapsed near a coal warehouse in the Lyari area of ​​Karachi.

The building collapse left two dead and twelve others wounded. The injured were then shifted to Civil Hospital.
