World record: woman survive highest fall without airbag is inspiring

World record

Guinness Global Records (GWR) recently turned to Twitter to share an astonishing story about a woman whose survival set a world record. It is the highest fall ever survived without a parachute in human history. It was created in 1972 while a flight attendant called Vesna Vulovic was aboard a DC-9 airliner. The plane was flying between Stockholm, Sweden, and Belgrade, Serbia, when a briefcase bomb planted in the baggage compartment exploded, killing all but Vesna.

Guinness World Records captioned the video, “This is the incredible story of the woman who fell 33,333 feet and survived…” According to a Guinness World Records book, Vesna’s survival was “attributed to her being pinned down by a food cart” in the aircraft’s main fuselage, which “‘crash-landed in thick snow at a favourable angle.” Bruno Honke, a World War II medic, saw her crying at the crash site and offered first aid to her before rescuers arrived. Vesna was in a coma for several days and suffered significant injuries, including a fractured skull, legs, and ribs. She was back on her feet in a matter of months.

Paul McCartney awarded Vesna with a certificate and medal for accomplishing extraordinary achievements during the organization’s Hall of Fame event in 1985.
