Putin spokesman accuses US of ‘provoking’ China amid expected Pelosi trip to Taiwan

putin
  • Dmitry Peskov, press secretary to Russian President Vladimir Putin, accused the United States of “provoking” China. Speculation that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will visit Taiwan during her Asian tour.
  • Neither Pelosi’s office nor the White House has confirmed whether she will travel to Taiwan.
  • Russia has become embroiled in the tense relations between Washington and Beijing. Russia seeks to reaffirm its ties with China amid deteriorating geopolitical relations.

Dmitry Peskov, press secretary to Russian President Vladimir Putin, accused the United States of “provoking” China on Tuesday, amid speculation that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will visit Taiwan during her trip to the region this week.

“Whether she makes it there or not, everything about this tour and the potential visit to Taiwan has a provocative character,” Peskov told Russian reporters. “Russia is completely united with China.”

Peskov’s remarks came as Pelosi arrived in Malaysia for the second leg of her Asian tour, having previously visited Singapore.

Neither Pelosi’s office nor the White House have confirmed whether she will travel to Taiwan, though the Biden administration stated on Monday that the United States would “not be intimidated” by China’s “saber-rattling” following a severe backlash from Beijing.

Pelosi said in a statement released Tuesday that she will meet with Malaysian officials to discuss “security challenges, economic opportunities, and governance priorities,” though Taipei was not specifically mentioned.

Pelosi is expected to arrive in Taipei Tuesday night, according to Taiwanese media.

White House Security Advisor Jake Sullivan was also pressed Tuesday morning about whether Pelosi, the highest-ranking elected US official to visit Taiwan in more than 25 years, would make the trip amid rising tensions with Beijing.

“I cannot confirm that because the Speaker makes her own travel decisions,” he told NBC’s Today show.

Sullivan, who stated that the United States still adheres to the one-China policy, noted that House Speakers have previously visited Taiwan, and that several members of Congress visited Taipei earlier this year.

“It is on China to try to turn what is historically normal into a crisis or to use it as a pretext for aggressive action around Taiwan. They’d be the ones raising the stakes “He continued. “The United States has no desire to escalate.”

Russia has become embroiled in the tense relations between Washington and Beijing, as Moscow seeks to reaffirm its ties with China amid deteriorating geopolitical relations with the West as a result of its involvement in the Ukraine conflict.

“Instead of understanding China’s position, the US has chosen the path of escalation and is provoking the situation,” Peskov claimed. “There will be no good come of it.”

Rebekah Koffler, a former Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) intelligence officer in Russian doctrine and strategy, told Fox News that the controversy over Pelosi’s rumoured visit plays right into Putin’s hands by diverting attention away from Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

“Putin is ecstatic about Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan because it’s turning into a risky diplomatic showdown between China and the US,” she explained. “This trip forces Washington to deal with two nuclear powers at the same time, both of which regard the United States as mortal enemies.”

According to Koffler, the tension surrounding her trip allows Putin to publicly support China, which he “in reality views as a competitor at best.”

“Putin is watching very closely whether the US will go ahead with Pelosi’s visit in the end, to assess Washington’s risk tolerance and Biden’s resolve,” she added.

Ukraine war: Russia says 40 Ukrainian prisoners killed in blast

ukraine
  • Russia says 40 Ukrainian prisoners-of-war killed by Ukrainian shelling of a prison in Donetsk.
  • Officials alleged that 75 others had been injured in rocket strike on prison camp in Olenivka.
  • Ukraine’s military denies carrying out the strike and accuses Russia of shelling prison.

Ukrainian shelling of a prison in separatist-held Donetsk killed 40 Ukrainian prisoners of war, according to Russia’s defence ministry.

Officials claimed that 75 people were injured in a rocket attack on the Olenivka prison camp. This claim cannot be independently verified by the news agency.

Ukraine’s military denied carrying out the strike, accusing Russia instead of shelling the prison.

It claimed that Moscow was attempting to conceal evidence of torture at the site.

“The Russian occupants pursued their criminal goals, accusing Ukraine of committing ‘war crimes,’ and concealing the torture of prisoners and shootings committed there by orders of the occupation administration and the command of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation,” Ukraine’s General Staff stated.

“The Russian enemy continues to use information warfare propaganda to accuse the Armed Forces of Ukraine of shelling civilian infrastructure and the population while concealing his own heinous actions.”

Footage shown on Russian state television shows the smoking wreckage of a building that appears to contain human remains. Although the Media agency cannot independently verify the footage, analysis indicates that the building was hit with an incendiary device rather than regular artillery.

According to Daniil Bezsonov, a spokesperson for the Russian-backed separatist Donetsk People’s Republic, the strike was a “direct hit on a barracks holding prisoners,” and the number of people killed could rise.

The strike was carried out with US-made Himars artillery, according to Russia’s defence ministry, and Ukraine was accused of a “deliberately perpetrated” provocation.

Lt Gen Igor Konashenkov, the ministry’s spokesperson, also stated that eight prison employees had been injured.

However, Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, described the Russian allegations as a “classic, cynical, and elaborate false flag operation” to discredit Ukrainian authorities.

“We demand a response from the United Nations and international organisations,” he added.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, also accused Russia of committing “another horrifying war crime.”

It has been established that a number of Ukrainian troops who surrendered to Russian forces following a lengthy siege at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol were transported to Olenivka.

The troops had resisted a relentless Russian assault on the sprawling site for weeks before surrendering in May after taking refuge in the plant’s maze of tunnels from artillery and air strikes.

Russian Pows Are Promised Freedom If They Join the War Against Ukraine

Russian Pows
  • Russian Pows in St. Petersburg offered amnesty and money if they join Putin’s war against Ukraine.
  • Wagner Group offers 200 thousand rubles ($3,446) and six months of “volunteer” service.
  • Prisoners were reportedly promised $85,873 as compensation for their families in the event of death.

Russian Pows in St. Petersburg are being offered freedom and money if they join Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine.

According to relatives of inmates serving sentences in the city, the notorious Russian mercenary Wagner Group is promising to pay 200 thousand rubles ($3,446) and an amnesty for six months of “volunteer” service in the Donbas region—if the prisoners return alive.

Convicts serving sentences at St. Petersburg’s IK-7 “Yablonevka” and IK-6 “Obukhovo” prisons were reportedly promised five million rubles ($85,873) as compensation for their families in the event of death.

According to a relative of a felon, prisoners were asked to “defend the Motherland.”

The prisoners were first told that only those who had previously served or fought in battle would be considered. But a few hours later, everybody was considered, and some 40 people signed up.

“All this is only in words, it will not be recorded anywhere on paper. At the same time, all the information is not transmitted directly, but through the foremen [prisoners who help the colony staff manage the units],” said a relative of one of the prisoners.

According to a relative, the detainees were informed that around 20% would return.

The news organisation also met with the families of a prisoner who accepted to be transferred to the Donbas region. The prisoner was apparently lured by the promise that he would be released in six months and that his criminal record would be cleared.
