US elections: Trump denies peaceful transfer of power to Joe Biden if he loses

Donald Trump VS Joe Biden

United States (US) President Donald Trump on Wednesday denied a peaceful transfer of power to Democratic rival Joe Biden if he loses the US election 2020 on November 3.

“We’re going to have to see what happens,” Trump told reporters when asked whether he would commit to transferring power for the US election 2020.

The president has repeatedly cast doubt on the legitimacy of the election, asserting without evidence that mail-in voting would lead to fraud and a “rigged” outcome.

“The ballots are a disaster,” Trump said.

Democrats have encouraged voting by mail as a way to cast ballots safely during the coronavirus pandemic. Millions of Americans, including much of the military, have cast absentee ballots by mail for years without problems. In 2016, Trump also raised questions about whether he would accept the results of the election.

US Coronavirus death toll surpasses 200,000 amidst fears for winter season

US Coronavirus

The United States (US) has surpassed 200,000 deaths from the novel coronavirus till date.

According to a rolling tally by Johns Hopkins University, more than 200,000 US citizens have died and 6.86 million have been confirmed infected by COVID-19.

The US has had the world’s highest official death toll for months, ahead of Brazil and India, with 137,272 and 88,935 deaths respectively.

Overall, the US accounts for 4% of the world’s population and 20% of its recorded coronavirus deaths.

Critics say the statistics expose the Trump administration’s failure to meet its sternest test ahead of the November 3 election.

“Due to Donald Trump’s lies and incompetence in the past six months, (we) have seen one of the gravest losses of American life in history,” his Democratic rival Joe Biden said.

“With this crisis that required serious presidential leadership, he just wasn’t up to it. He froze… and America has paid the worst price of any nation in the world.”

While insisting that the United States is already “rounding the corner,” Trump has high hopes that the swift approval of a Covid-19 vaccine will boost his reelection chances.

“We will distribute a vaccine, we will defeat the virus, we will end the pandemic, and we will enter a new era of unprecedented prosperity, cooperation and peace,” Trump said in a recorded message to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

Trump has previously stated that by April of next year, most Americans who want to be immunized will have a vaccine.

But most experts argue that betting on vaccines is not a viable strategy.

Joe Biden wins democratic nomination for November elections

Trump's rival Joe Biden

Former vice-president Joe Biden was officially announced as the Democratic candidate to challenge President Donald Trump in the US election 2020.

In an unprecedented roll call vote that took place entirely online due to the coronavirus pandemic, all 50 states and seven territories announced their vote tallies that cemented Biden’s role as the party flag bearer.

“Well thank you very, very much, from the bottom of my heart,” Biden said in a live video link.

“It means the world to me and my family,” he added, reminding viewers he will deliver a formal acceptance speech on Thursday at the conclusion of the four-day jamboree.

The nomination was a formality as he had already won the majority of the more than 3,900 delegates back in June.

The roll call came on Day 2 of the most virtual Democratic National Convention aimed at celebrating the party´s candidate and welcoming independents and frustrated Republicans into their political movement to oust Trump from the White House.

The proceedings included a series of presentations by party leaders past and future who unleashed their own arguments against the White House incumbent and urged voters to rally around Biden.

The lineup featured president Jimmy Carter, who served one term from 1977, and 1990s commander-in-chief Bill Clinton, who warned that the Trump White House is swirling with chaos instead of the competence necessary to address the nation’s crises.

TikTok denies US accusations of ties to Chinese government

Clips

Chinese video-sharing app TikTok has denied rumours linking up to the Chinese government calling the US accusations as ‘rumours and misinformation’.

TikTok launched an online information hub as its Chinese parent firm faced a deadline set by President Donald Trump to divest TikTok before the app is banned in the United States.

On a web page titled “The Last Sunny Corner of the Internet,” TikTok maintained it was setting the record straight about the platform.

“TikTok has never provided any US user data to the Chinese government, nor would it do so if asked,” the company said in the post.

“Any insinuation to the contrary is unfounded and blatantly false.”

According to TikTok, US user data is stored here, with a backup in Singapore.

The company, owned by China-based ByteDance, also launched a new Twitter account to address issues in real-time.

Trump has claimed TikTok could be used by China to track the locations of federal employees and conduct corporate espionage.

The US leader early this month also ordered a ban on the messaging app WeChat which is used extensively in China.

Trump once again targets TikTok with new executive order

Donald Trump targeting TikTok

United States (US) President Donald Trump once again targeted ByteDance with a new executive order ordering it to sell the US operations of its video-sharing app TikTok within 90 days.

Trump, last week, issued restrictions that TikTok and WeChat will end all operations in the US, his move aimed to counter China’s rising global power.

ByteDance bought karaoke video app Musical.y from a Chinese rival about three years ago in a deal valued at nearly a billion dollars. It later incorporated into TikTok, which turned out to be global popularity.

Trump’s order contends there is “credible evidence” leading him to believe that ByteDance’s take-over of Musical.ly ‘threatens to impair the national security of the United States.’

US to withdraw nearly 12,000 American troops from Germany

US to withdraw troops from Germany

The United States (US) has said it was withdrawing 12,000 American troops from Germany in a move which President Donald Trump described specifically to punish Germany for “not paying the bills” for the defence of Europe.

The Pentagon on Wednesday called the move to withdraw American troops “strategic” repositioning, but Trump said was to punish Berlin for its weak defence spending.

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said that the Pentagon will be sending home about 6,400 of its military personnel in Germany, and move nearly 5,600 to other NATO countries, including Italy and Belgium.

Some could also be relocated to Poland and the Baltic countries if Washington can reach agreements with them, he said.

The move, which will cost the US government several billion dollars, will cut the presence of US military personnel in Germany to around 24,000.

Esper stressed that the action is part of his broader plan to reposition US military forces globally to better address the key threats from Russia and China.
