Italy: There is no peace for dead or living after tragic shipwreck

Italy
  • There is still no peace for the living or the dead two weeks after tragic shipwreck.
  • A girl aged five or six was discovered on Saturday morning.
  • Many of the dead were identified by the local coroner’s office.

There is still no peace for the living or the dead two weeks after a boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of southern Italy, and the missing – mostly children – continue to wash up on the beaches.

The latest, a girl aged five or six, was discovered on Saturday morning, bringing the total to 74 since the ill-fated boat broke apart on the rocks off the village of Cutro on February 26. Almost half were minors.

Many of the dead were identified by the local coroner’s office, including Torpekai Amarkhel, a 42-year-old female journalist from Afghanistan who was killed along with her husband and two of their three children.

Her other child, a seven-year-old daughter, is one of the approximately 30 people who are still missing and presumed dead as a result of the tragedy.

Amarkhel fled Afghanistan with her family following the crackdown on women, according to her sister Mida, who had emigrated to Rotterdam and was involved in a United Nations project in which Amarkhel was involved.

Shahida Raza, a football and hockey player for Pakistan’s national team, was also killed. A friend stated that she was travelling in order to provide a better future for her disabled son.

Those discovered were initially assigned alphanumeric code numbers rather than names. When first responders discovered the body of 28-year-old Afghan Abiden Jafari, they only identified her as KR16D45 – KR for the nearby city of Crotone, 16 because she was the 16th victim discovered, D for donna or woman, and 45, her estimated age.

However, after transporting her to the mortuary, they discovered she was a women’s rights activist who had been threatened by the Taliban, prompting her to risk her life at sea.

The body of a six-year-old boy, initially identified as KR70M6, was named Hakef Taimoori by his uncle.

The body of a six-year-old boy, initially identified as KR70M6, was named Hakef Taimoori by his uncle.

The dead have also become embroiled in a conflict between the Italian state and family members.

In accordance with Italy’s protocol for irregular migrants who die attempting to enter Italy, the Interior Ministry ordered that all bodies be transferred from Calabria, where the caskets had been on display in an auditorium, to the Islamic cemetery of Bologna for burial.

On Wednesday, family members who either survived the crash or travelled from other parts of Europe to claim their loved ones’ remains protested in front of the auditorium with makeshift signs and a sit-in.

There is a growing firestorm about the rescue itself, set against the backdrop of the saga about what to do with both the survivors and the victims.

The day before the ship sank, a surveillance plane for European border control Frontex identified it and alerted the Italian Coast Guard.

According to the Coast Guard, the vessel was not identified as a migrant boat and did not appear to be in distress.

The Coast Guard’s heat sensing surveillance images show that only one person was visible on board the ship when they flew over it.

Survivors told media and human rights organisations that they were locked in the ship’s hull and only allowed to come up for air at intervals during the four-day journey from Turkey.

Hundreds of migrants in distress off the coast of Calabria in Italy

Italy
  • The country’s navy and coastguard are hurrying to assist.
  • Last week at least 73 migrants were killed in a shipwreck in the same area.
  • Italy’s far-right government was accused of failing to do more to avert deaths.

A massive operation is underway off the coast of Italy to rescue 1,300 migrants in overcrowded boats.

The country’s navy and coastguard are hurrying to assist three vessels near the southern area of Calabria, according to reports.

The operation was classified as “especially challenging” by Italy’s coastguard because of the large number of boats and individuals at risk.

The rescue operation comes nearly two weeks after at least 73 migrants were killed in a shipwreck in the same area.

A six-year-old kid was among the fatalities, whose body was discovered on Friday.

Following last month’s calamity, Italy’s far-right government was accused of failing to do more to avert deaths.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni responded by leading her government to the wreckage in Cutro.

She has advocated prison sentences of up to 30 years for people smugglers who have caused deaths or serious injuries.

This year has witnessed an upsurge in the number of migrants coming by sea to Italy. According to the interior ministry, it has registered three times as many arrivals as during the same period last year.

Italy: migrant smugglers to face more than 30 years in jail

Italy
  • Italy’s prime minister has outlined plans for people smugglers.
  • Giorgia Meloni unveiled the proposals serving up to 30 years in prison.
  • The proposals were made during a cabinet meeting near the site of a shipwreck.

Italy’s prime minister has outlined plans that could result in extended prison sentences for people smugglers responsible for deaths and serious injuries.

Giorgia Meloni unveiled the proposals, which could result in smugglers serving up to 30 years in prison.

Ministers also agreed on measures to improve legal pathways for foreign workers entering Italy.

The proposals were made during a cabinet meeting near the site of a shipwreck that killed 72 migrants last month.

Ms Meloni insisted at the meeting in the Calabrian town of Cutro that she was determined to defeat people smuggling.

“Our response to what happened is a policy of greater firmness on the ground,” she said, adding that Italy would take action against smugglers on the boats as well as those in third countries who organized the trips.

The government has denied responsibility for the disaster, but Ms Meloni has stated that more improved and legal routes must be established to allow migrants to safely enter the country.

“I believe that another way to fight people smugglers is to send out the message that it does not pay to enter Italy illegally,” she said.

Separately, she stated that countries that assist in educating their citizens about the dangers of travelling to Italy through criminal networks would be given preferential quotas for legal migrant workers.

Protesters threw stuffed animals at passing cars as ministers were driven to a cabinet meeting in Cutro on Thursday. Some held up signs reading “They could have been saved”.

Ms Meloni’s right-wing government has come under fire for the February disaster, with questions raised about whether more could have been done to prevent it.

The majority of those aboard the 200-person wooden vessel were said to be from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, and Iran.

The ship is believed to have sunk after colliding with rocks in rough weather while attempting to land near Crotone.

According to officials, 72 bodies have been recovered and 79 people have survived, but approximately 30 people are still missing.

Matteo Messina Denaro: Coded note led to the arrest of an Italian mafia boss

Matteo Messina Denaro
  • He is accused of being a boss of the infamous Cosa Nostra Mafia.
  • Coded note hidden within a chair leg assisted in the arrest of Italy’s most sought Mafia boss.
  • Rosalia Messina Denaro was arrested in Sicily on Friday.

A warrant shows that a coded note hidden within a chair leg assisted in the arrest of Italy’s most sought Mafia boss, Matteo Messina Denaro.

The note was discovered during a clandestine operation at his sister Rosalia’s house, one month before his arrest in Palermo, Sicily, in January.

Rosalia Messina Denaro was arrested in Sicily on Friday.

Her brother, 60, has been on the run for 30 years and is thought to have gotten away with the help of family.

He is accused of being a boss of the infamous Cosa Nostra Mafia and was tried and sentenced to life in prison in absentia for a slew of killings in 2002.

On January 16, he was apprehended by police outside a private clinic in Palermo where he was undergoing cancer treatment under a false identity.

More than 100 military personnel were engaged in his arrest.

Rosalia Messina Denaro, 67, also known as Rosetta, was arrested in Sicily on Friday on mafia membership accusations, with the Carabinieri – Italian police – issuing a 57-page arrest warrant outlining some of the events that led to her brother’s earlier detention.

According to the warrant, police discovered a message within the leg of an aluminum chair in Rosalia’s home in Castelvetrano, on the west of the island, while attempting to put a listening device inside during an operation in December.

Police photographed the note, which appeared to be a mix of words, signs, and letters at first, then reinstalled it where it was discovered.

The message was a Pizzino, which was a small piece of paper written in code that Messina Denaro used to communicate with his relatives and affiliates.

The analysis, it detailed a man’s battle with colon cancer, with investigators focusing their attention on Messina Denaro after confirming that no other family members had similar cancer diagnoses.

The “historic result of the capture… originated from a note, imprudently kept, albeit hidden, by Rosetta”, a judge wrote in the warrant.

She is alleged to have played a major role in her mafia family, acting as treasurer, with police saying she communicated with her brother using the code name “Fragolone”, or “big strawberry”.

Rosalia was described as having “origins and customs all inspired by an orthodox and rock-hard mafia culture” in the warrant.

According to the warrant, she is being investigated for being a member of the mafia organization and committing crimes through her membership, including assisting her brother in avoiding multiple jail sentences, assisting him in continuing in his role as the organization’s boss, and ensuring that other members of the organization could communicate with him while he was hiding from authorities.

Italy migrant boat shipwreck: Police detained three for alleged smuggling

Italy
  • At least 64 migrants died in a shipwreck off Italy’s southern coast.
  • Authorities have cautioned that the final death toll might exceed 100.
  • A Turkish male and two Pakistani nationals were apprehended.

Following the deaths of at least 64 migrants in a shipwreck off Italy‘s southern coast on Sunday, police arrested three persons on suspicion of people smuggling.

A Turkish male and two Pakistani nationals were apprehended.

The majority of persons aboard the 200-person wooden boats were claimed to be from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, and Iran.

Authorities have cautioned that the final death toll might exceed 100.

On Tuesday morning, rescuers recovered another body from the sea: that of a guy.

Despite terrible weather, the three men apprehended are reported to have sailed the boat from Izmir, Turkey, to Calabria, Italy.

Authorities claim they reportedly requested the migrants for roughly €8,000 (£7,000; $8,500) each to make the arduous journey.

The ship is said to have sunk after colliding with rocks in heavy weather while attempting to land in Crotone.

The coastguard said that 80 passengers were found alive, “including some who managed to reach the land after the sinking,” implying that many more were still missing.

The coffins of the victims found so far have been put out in a sports hall in Crotone – little white caskets for the younger victims and brown ones for the elderly – to allow people to pay their condolences. At least 12 children, including an infant, have been killed.

Families of the victims from Northern Europe have gathered to try to find out what happened to their loved ones and identify bodies where needed.

Several of the migrants on board had come from Afghanistan, according to rescuers, and Pakistan has confirmed that 16 of its residents survived the accident, with four still missing.

Since 2014, more than 20,000 people have died or gone missing at sea in the central Mediterranean, according to monitoring organizations.

Virat Kohli claims that Anushka Sharma has made significant sacrifices as a mother

Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma
  • Virat Kohli praised wife-actor Anushka Sharma for her ‘massive sacrifices’ as a mother.
  • He said all that matters is that her family loves her for who she is.
  • Anushka and Virat married in 2017 in an intimate ceremony in Italy after dating for some years.

Anushka Sharma, who is also an actress, was mentioned by Virat Kohli in a recent interview as having made “huge sacrifices” over the past two years as a mother. The cricket player claimed that after observing Anushka’s way of life, he came to the realization that “any issues he had were nothing.”
After dating for a while, Anushka and Virat were united in marriage in a small ceremony in Italy in 2017. In January 2021, Vamika Kohli, their daughter, was born. Virat stated, “Your family loves you for who you are,” when talking about “the past two years” with his wife and daughter.

“Under the circumstances over the previous two years, we have had our child, and as a mother, she has made enormous sacrifices. I understood that any issues I had were nothing when I looked at her. As far as expectations go, you shouldn’t have too much because that is the very minimum, according to Virat, who recently spoke on the RCB (Royal Challengers Bangalore) podcast.

Virat continued by describing how Anushka motivates him. While seeking inspiration, one should begin at home, and Anushka has undoubtedly served as a major source of motivation for him. My outlook on life changed drastically. When you fall in love with someone, your internal processes begin to shift.

In an interview earlier this year, Virat said that the slump in his career had left him feeling irritated and “cranky,” which had caused him to be unjust to his wife Anushka and other family members. In an interview with bcci.tv, Virat had stated, “In my case, in denial, irritation was sneaking in. I was really irritable and snappy in my own area. It wasn’t fair to my family, my wife Anushka Sharma, and the individuals who help you, either. I therefore had to accept responsibility and attempt to put things into perspective.

Anushka, who has been in movies such Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, PK, Band Baaja Baaraat, Sultan, and Ae Dil Hai Mushki, was most recently spotted on a big screen in the 2018 movie Zero starring Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif. She most recently made a cameo role in her brother Karnesh Sharma’s Netflix film Qala (2022). In the song Ghodey Pe Sawaar, she may be seen. The following project for Anushka after the birth of her daughter Vamika is Chakda Xpress. The life of cricketer Jhulan Goswami is the basis for the movie.

More than 100 feared dead after Italy migrant boat shipwreck

Italy
  • 12 children, including a baby, were among the dead.
  • 80 people had been found alive.
  • Many of those on board are believed to be Pakistanis.

There are worries that more than 100 people, including children, perished when their boat capsized off the coast of southern Italy.

At least 63 migrants have been confirmed dead, with 12 children, including a baby, among the dead.

On Sunday, the vessel, which was carrying approximately 200 people, broke apart while attempting to land in Crotone.

Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s Prime Minister, has urged EU institutions to take action to curb illegal migrant boat trips.

People from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, and Iran were claimed to be on board the boat, which had left Turkey a few days before.

Corpses were discovered on a beach near a coastal resort in the Calabria region.

The coastguard said 80 people had been found alive, “including some who managed to reach the shore after the sinking”, meaning many more remained unaccounted for.

Customs officers reported one survivor was arrested on migrant trafficking allegations.

Two dozen Pakistanis lost their lives

Many of those on board were believed to be Pakistanis. Its Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, stated on Monday that more than two dozen Pakistanis were among the deceased.

As relief and relocation efforts continue, a group of survivors of the fatal shipwreck is struggling to cope with the death of their loved ones.

Some of them were crying without speaking at a temporary welcome center in the town of Isola di Capo Rizzuto, while others were covered in blankets and stared into the void.

“They are heavily traumatized,” said Sergio Di Dato, from the charity Médecins Sans Frontières. “Some children have lost their whole family. We are offering them all the support we can.”

A 16-year-old Afghan kid lost his 28-year-old sister, who perished on the beach beside him. He couldn’t have the courage to tell his parents.

A 43-year-old Afghan man and his 14-year-old son survived, but his wife and three other children, ages 13, nine, and five, did not. Another Afghan widow in tears refused to leave the beach following the death of her husband.

“This is yet another tragedy happening near our shores. It reminds us all that the Mediterranean is a giant mass grave, with tens of thousands of souls in it, and it continues to widen,” said Francesco Creazzo, from SOS Méditerranée, a non-governmental organization engaged in rescue operations in the central Mediterranean.

“There is no end in sight; in 2013, people said ‘never again’ to the little white coffins of Lampedusa, in 2015, they said ‘never again’ in front of the lifeless body of a two-year-old Syrian child on a beach.

“Now the words ‘never again’ are not even pronounced anymore. We only hear ‘no more departures’, but unfortunately people keep venturing on this journey and they keep dying,” he added.

  • A baby believed to be only a few months old was among the deceased.

Italy: At least 59 migrants, including 12 children, were killed and dozens more remain missing after their boat capsized in strong waves off the coast of southern Italy.

The ship blew up while attempting to land near the Calabrian seaside town of Crotone. According to survivors, at least 150 people were on board.

According to Italy’s president, many of them were fleeing terrible circumstances.

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who visited the area, stated that up to 30 individuals remain missing.

According to Italy’s news agency, a baby believed to be only a few months old was among the deceased.

Corpses were retrieved from a neighboring coastal resort’s beach.

The coastguard claimed 80 passengers had been found alive, “including some who managed to reach the land after the sinking”.

The exact number of people on the boat when it split apart is unknown; rescue officials informed the AFP news agency that the vessel was carrying “more than 200 people,” implying that more than 60 people are still missing.

Passengers from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, and Iran boarded the ship, which set sail from Turkey a few days ago.

Every year, a large number of migrants fleeing conflict or poverty make their way from Africa to Italy.

The ship is said to have sunk after colliding with rocks during rough weather, sparking a massive search and rescue operation both on land and at sea.

Timber from the shipwreck, which had been broken into bits, washed ashore on the beach, along with fragments of the hull, according to video footage.

Survivors may be seen huddled under blankets, being catered to by Red Cross personnel. Some people have been transported to the hospital.

“There had been landings, but never a tragedy like this,” said Antonio Ceraso, mayor of Cruto.

As Venice’s canals run dry, Italy faces a fresh drought alert

Italy
  • Italy will face another drought after last summer’s disaster.
  • Italy’s rivers and lakes are severely depleted of water.
  • An anticyclone has dominated the weather in Western Europe.

Weeks of dry winter weather have increased fears that Italy will face another drought after last summer’s disaster, with the Alps receiving less than half of their average snowfall, according to scientists and environmental groups.

The warning comes as Venice, where flooding is ordinarily a major problem, experiences extremely low tides that make it hard for gondolas, water taxis, and ambulances to navigate parts of its iconic canals.

A mixture of reasons is being blamed for the troubles in Venice, including a lack of rain, a high-pressure system, a full moon, and sea currents.

The Legambiente environmental group stated on Monday that Italy’s rivers and lakes are severely depleted of water, with the north of the nation receiving special attention.

The Po, Italy’s longest river that flows from the Alps in the northwest to the Adriatic, has 61% less water than usual this time of year, according to a statement.

Last July, Italy announced a state of emergency for the areas surrounding the Po, which accounts for nearly one-third of the country’s agricultural output and was experiencing its worst drought in 70 years.

Water deficit situation

“We are in a water deficit situation that has been building up since the winter of 2020-2021,” climate expert Massimiliano Pasqui from the Italian scientific research institute CNR was quoted as saying by the daily Corriere della Sera.

“We need to recover 500 millimeters in the north-western regions: we need 50 days of rain,” he added.

Water levels on Lake Garda in northern Italy have reached record lows, allowing access to the lake’s small island of San Biagio through an exposed footpath.

For the past 15 days, an anticyclone has dominated the weather in Western Europe, delivering moderate temperatures more typical of late April.

The latest weather projections, however, indicate that much-needed precipitation and snow will arrive in the Alps in the coming days.

Rome: Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said on Sunday that if he were still in charge, he would not seek a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelenskyy because he blames the Ukrainian President for the conflict with Russia.

Berlusconi, 86, had boasted of his closeness with Russian President Vladimir Putin until Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last September when he declared Putin had been pushed into the war and wanted “decent people” in charge of Kyiv.

Berlusconi, the leader of the country’s ruling coalition’s conservative Forza Italia party, was commenting after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni accused France of undermining EU unity on Ukraine by hosting a Franco-German dinner in Paris with Zelenskyy that excluded other European allies.

“I would never have gone talking to Zelenskyy because we are witnessing the devastation of his country and the slaughter of its soldiers and civilians,” Berlusconi told journalists after voting at a polling station for a regional election in Lombardy.

He also stated that if Zelenskyy had ceased bombing the two Donbas separatist republics, the war would not have occurred. “So I judge this gentleman’s behavior very, very gentleman,” Berlusconi added.

Meloni’s office said the Italian government’s support for Ukraine is “firm and convinced, as clearly stated in the program and as confirmed in all the parliamentary votes of the majority supporting the executive”.

After 16 years on the run, a mafia boss finds work as pizza boss

Mafia
  • Edgardo Greco was captured in Saint-Etienne, France.
  • Edgardo Greco was working as a pizzaiolo – or pizza chef.
  • He frequently posted on social media under a fictitious name.

Rome: Anti-Mafia police in Italy have apprehended another fugitive gangster, just two weeks after the arrest of Sicilian Cosa Nostra supremo Matteo Messina Denaro in a health facility in Palermo, Sicily, on January 16.

This time, Edgardo Greco, 63, was captured in Saint-Etienne, France, where he was working as a pizzaiolo – or pizza chef – at the Caffe Rossini Italian restaurant under the alias Paolo Dimitrio.

Greco was convicted in absentia in 1991 for the double homicide of brothers Stefano and Giuseppe Bartolomeo, whom he is accused of killing with iron rods before dissolving their bodies in acid, according to court documents. Since his conviction, he had eluded Italian authorities.

Greco was dubbed a “dangerous fugitive” by Nicola Gratteri, the anti-Mafia prosecutor who led the investigation as head of the Catanzaro Public Prosecutor’s Office in Calabria. He was also convicted of the attempted murder of many prison officials, earning him the moniker “prison killer.”

Gratteri began pursuing Greco when he was mentioned in an article in the French publication Le Progres, which the restaurant shared on its own Facebook page.

Calabria police also stated that he frequently posted on social media under a fictitious name. When I called the restaurant on Friday, the phone line was disconnected.
