Sri Lanka and Pakistan: Spinners will decide at Galle

Sri Lanka and Pakistan
  • Sri Lanka and Pakistan meet in the first Test in Galle.
  • Both sides’ batting greats have passed away, and spinners will be key to the outcome.
  • Niroshan Dickwella is Sri Lanka’s leading wicket-taker against Pakistan.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan are third and fourth on the WTC table, respectively, and this series could make or break their prospects of making the final.

Throughout the middle of the last decade, Sri Lanka and Pakistan appeared to play the annual Test series. These were frequently hotly contested and provided fascinating cricket. The frenetic fourth-innings chase in Sharjah in early 2014, and the magnificent Younis Khan-led success in Pallekele the following year, stand out. There were also Rangana Herath routs in Abu Dhabi in 2017 and Galle in 2014.

Kumar Sangakkara’s dominance over Saeed Ajmal, Yasir Shah dominating a series in Sri Lanka in 2015, and Sri Lanka’s quicks occasionally outdoing Pakistan’s in the UAE are all examples of this. Perhaps this is a low-intensity rivalry, but the narratives have been constantly compelling.

In 2019, these teams played a series in Pakistan, in which the home team won 1-0. But, at least in Sri Lanka, this appears to be a new beginning. Both sides’ batting greats have passed away. Pakistan has dangerous young quicks, and despite a poor performance in the first Test against Australia, Sri Lanka’s batting is improving.

Australia lose top Test championship spot after Sri Lanka defeat

Australia vs Sri Lanka
  • Australia lost their top World Test Championship position.
  • Dinesh Chandimal scores maiden Test double ton for Sri Lanka.
  • Kane Williamson’s New Zealand won the inaugural Test championship final last year.

Australia lost their top World Test Championship position to South Africa Tuesday after they were defeated by Sri Lanka in the second match of their series.

The island nation completed a stunning innings and 39-run victory over captain Pat Cummins’ Australia in Galle on Monday to end the two-match series level at 1-1.

The result shook up the championship table with Sri Lanka climbing to third as the race to make the final hots up.

“South Africa take over as the new leader on the latest standings with a win-loss percentage of 71.43 percent, while Australia drop to second with 70 percent after their first Test loss in the current period,” the International Cricket Council said.

“Sri Lanka are now firmly in the mix for the World Test Championship final next year, with their win helping them jump in front of Pakistan, India and West Indies.”

Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya had a dream debut with a match haul of 12 wickets and veteran batsman Dinesh Chandimal stood out with an unbeaten 206 — his maiden Test double ton.

Cummins termed the loss a “reality check” for a team that won the opener inside three days but were then bundled out on the fourth day of the second match.

“The reality is some of our players haven’t been here before. So you could call it a reality check, because it’s a first experience,” Australian coach Andrew McDonald said, agreeing with the skipper.

“It’s a sample size of one. We have the opportunity to learn from that. And we’ll take that. But we learned a hell of a lot in the first game too.

“You can learn through winning and you can learn through defeat too.”

Australia’s next Test outing is at home against West Indies in November, while Sri Lanka host Pakistan for a two-match series starting Saturday.

Kane Williamson’s New Zealand won the inaugural Test championship final last year, beating India in Southampton.

Pakistan’s tour to Sri Lanka surrounded by uncertainty

Pakistan tour to Sri Lanka
  • Babar Azam-led team completed a three-day warm-up match in Colombo.
  • Sri Lanka is in discussions with the IMF after defaulting on $51 billion in foreign debt.
  • To cut down on commuting, the government shut down non-essential offices and schools.

Pakistan’s visit to Sri Lanka is uncertain in light of the island nation’s declaration of a state of emergency on Wednesday.

Prior to their two-match Test series against the home team, the Babar Azam-led team just completed a three-day warm-up match.

No decision has been made to cancel the tour, according to a PCB official. “PCB and Sri Lanka Cricket are always in contact,” the official added.

“The series can be delayed if the situation is not under control.”

The first game is scheduled to start on July 16 in Galle, while the second game will start on July 24 in Colombo.

It should be mentioned that following months of widespread protests over an economic crisis, hundreds of people flocked to the prime minister’s office when the president of the nation traveled to the Maldives.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his official mansion in Colombo moments before tens of thousands of demonstrators overran it over the weekend, but he promised to step down on Wednesday to pave the way for a “peaceful transition of power.”

In order to prevent protesters from overrunning the compound, police used tear gas, and authorities proclaimed a national state of emergency “to deal with the crisis in the country,” according to the prime minister’s spokesperson Dinouk Colombage.

To “contain the situation,” according to a senior police officer, police put an indefinite curfew in place in the Western Province, which includes Colombo.

Sri Lanka is in discussions with the IMF for a potential rescue after defaulting on its $51 billion in foreign debt in April.

The island’s already limited gasoline supplies are almost gone.

To cut down on commuting and save gasoline, the government has mandated the shutdown of non-essential offices and schools.

Sri Lanka president got stuck as airport immigration staff blocked his exit

Sri Lanka
  • Gotabaya Rajapaksa has pledged to step down and pave the way for a “peaceful transition of power.”
  • Just before tens of thousands of protesters overran his official residence in Colombo.
  • Rajapaksa enjoys arrest immunity in his capacity as president, and it’s rumoured that he wants to travel abroad before resigning.

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s embattled president was stuck in his own country Tuesday in a humiliating standoff with airport immigration staff blocking his exit to safety abroad, official sources said Tuesday.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa has promised to resign on Wednesday and clear the way for a “peaceful transition of power” following widespread protests against him over the country’s unprecedented economic crisis.

The 73-year-old leader fled his official residence in Colombo just before tens of thousands of protesters overran it on Saturday and wanted to travel to Dubai, officials said.

As president, Rajapaksa enjoys immunity from arrest, and he is believed to want to go abroad before stepping down to avoid the possibility of being detained.

But immigration officers were refusing to go to the VIP suite to stamp his passport, while he insisted he would not go through the public facilities fearing reprisals from other airport users.

The president and his wife spent the night at a military base next to the main international airport after missing four flights that could have taken them to the United Arab Emirates.

Rajapaksa’s youngest brother Basil, who resigned in April as finance minister, missed his own Emirates flight to Dubai early Tuesday after a similar standoff with the airport staff.

Basil tried to use the paid concierge service for business travellers, but the airport and immigration staff said they were withdrawing from the fast track service with immediate effect.

“There were some other passengers who protested against Basil boarding their flight,” an airport official told AFP. “It was a tense situation, so he hurriedly left the airport.”

Basil, a US dual citizen, had to obtain a new passport after leaving his behind at the presidential palace when the Rajapaksas beat a hasty retreat to avoid mobs on Saturday, a diplomatic source said.

Hasty retreat

Official sources said a suitcase full of documents had also been left behind at the stately mansion along with 17.85 million rupees in cash, now in the custody of a Colombo court.

There was no official word from the president’s office about his whereabouts, but he remained commander-in-chief of the armed forces with military resources at his disposal.

One option still open to him would be to take a navy vessel to either India or the Maldives, a defence source said.

If Rajapaksa steps down as promised, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will automatically become acting president until parliament elects an MP to serve out the presidential term, which ends in November 2024.

Rajapaksa is accused of mismanaging the economy to a point where the country has run out of foreign exchange to finance even the most essential imports, leading to severe hardships for the 22 million population.

Sri Lanka defaulted on its $51-billion foreign debt in April and is in talks with the IMF for a possible bailout.

The island has nearly exhausted its already scarce supplies of petrol. The government has ordered the closure of non-essential offices and schools to reduce commuting and save fuel.

Covid outbreak hits Sri Lanka on eve of Australia Test

Covid
  • Sri Lanka’s players tested positive for Covid-19 on eve of the second Test against Australia.
  • Dhananjaya de Silva, Jeffrey Vandersay and Asitha Fernando all tested positive.
  • Hosts looking to bounce back from crushing 10-wicket defeat in first Test.

A Covid-19 outbreak hit Sri Lanka’s team on the eve of Friday’s second Test against Australia with Dhananjaya de Silva, Jeffrey Vandersay and Asitha Fernando all testing positive for the virus.

“All three players were found to be positive during a Rapid Antigen Test conducted yesterday,” Sri Lanka Cricket said Thursday.

The hosts are looking to bounce back after their crushing 10-wicket defeat inside three days in the opening Test of the two-match series.

Angelo Mathews has returned to the team after testing positive during the first Test but Praveen Jayawickrama had already been ruled out on Tuesday after testing positive for Covid.

Sri Lanka had already reinforced their spin bowling contingent with the addition of Maheesh Theekshana, Dinuth Wellalage and Prabath Jayasuriya along with all-rounder Lakshita Manasinghe, who bowls off-spin.

Lakshan Sandakan, a left-arm wrist-spinner who last played a Test in 2018, was added Thursday to the squad as further cover.
