  • The attack resulted in the death of 12 people and injuries to 11 others.
  • The gunmen began firing indiscriminately after being confronted by the guests.
  • Two women were among the killed, and most victims were between 17 and 35 years old.

Gunmen stormed a gathering of young people at a venue in Salvatierra, Mexico, during a pre-Christmas religious celebration. This resulted in the tragic death of 12 people and injuries to 11 others.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Sunday local time in the Salvatierra town.  According to the local mayor, they had no connections to criminal groups.

While this region has seen its share of deadly confrontations, they typically involve rival gangs targeting each other.

Reports suggest that approximately 40 mostly young individuals had assembled at a former ranch, repurposed as a rental venue, on Saturday evening.

They were observing Las Posadas, a tradition celebrated between December 16 and 24, where participants re-enact the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem.

A witness mentioned that the gunmen began firing indiscriminately after being confronted by the guests, leading to this horrifying incident.

“We realized they were not invited, and when they were asked who they were, they started shooting,” he said.

The identities of the attack victims haven’t been officially disclosed. However local newspapers suggest that members of the regional Mexican music band Dinastía Cornejo were among the injured. The band, through its Facebook page, urged people to donate blood at the local hospital. Unconfirmed reports also indicate the death of a member of the band’s support staff in the attack.

Two women were among those killed, and most victims were reportedly between 17 and 35 years old. While the Guanajuato state prosecutor’s office is conducting an investigation, there hasn’t been any official statement explaining why the gunmen might have targeted this specific celebration. According to officials, this is the highest number of murders among Mexican states.

According to analysis, the violence is mainly due to control over the territory and access to oil pipelines.

Two powerful criminal groups, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel, are operating in the state. They have been increasingly involved in illegal activities, particularly the theft of oil, which they later sell on the black market.
