Sindh caretaker CM immediately dismisses BIEK Chairman Naseem Memon

  • Prof Memon reinstated as Chairman of Larkana Board
  • Larkana Board Chairman Mirjat will be returned to previous post
  • Former BIEK chairman Dr Saeed was also prematurely removed

KARACHI: Caretaker Chief Minister of Sindh Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqir promptly dismissed Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi (BIEK) Chairman Professor Naseem Memon from his position.

The Chief Minister then reinstated Professor Naseem Ahmed Memon as the Chairman of the Larkana Board. Professor Memon will serve as Chairman of the Larkana Board until June 30, 2024, completing the remainder of his tenure.

Simultaneously, Sikander Ali Mirjat, who held the position of Chairman of the Intermediate and Secondary Board Larkana, was swiftly relieved of his duties. Sikandar Ali Mirjat will be returned to his original role as Inspector of Institutions.

It is pertinent to mention here, the Chairman of the Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi (BIEK), Prof Dr Saeeduddin, was prematurely removed from his position, with the Sindh government taking this action before the completion of his term.

This decision occurred during the ongoing intermediate examinations in the provincial capital. Dr Naseem Memon, Chairman of the Larkana Education Board, was appointed as the new Chairman of BIEK for the next two years.

A few days ago, Dr Saeeduddin was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the Hyderabad Institute of Technology and Management Sciences. However, he declined the position due to the ongoing class 11 examinations in Karachi, and the results for class 12 were under preparation.

Sources revealed that Mureed Rahimoon, the Secretary of the Universities and Boards Department of the Government of Sindh, had appointed the Chairman of the Larkana Board as the interim Chairman of the Karachi Intermediate Board for a two-year term, following consultation and approval from the then Sindh Education Minister Ismail Rahoo.

Critics expressed concerns about the timing of changing the chairman during ongoing examinations, fearing potential adverse impacts on the exams and results.

Meanwhile, the chairmen of the Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpur Khas, and Sindh Technical Board have completed their terms, yet replacements for these vacancies have not been appointed.

Additionally, the chairmen of the Sindh Technical Board Karachi and the Hyderabad Board are functioning without proper notifications, raising concerns.

Dr Farooq, Chairman of the Benazirabad Board, had overseen the Sakrand University for an extended period.

Sources suggested that political pressure led to the removal of the Karachi Intermediate Board’s chairman. With thousands of employees from the Karachi Intermediate Board involved in election duties, assigning the role to the Chairman of the Larkana board before the elections is viewed as a potential attempt to influence the process.

Furthermore, there are claims that political figures intervened to prevent Dr Saeeduddin from becoming the Vice Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad.

Despite this, he successfully secured the position of Vice Chancellor at the Hyderabad Institute of Technology and Management Sciences for a four-year term following a thorough search committee process and clearance in an interview by President Arif Alvi.
