FBR decides to accelerate action against non-filers

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to accelerate its initiative against individuals who have not filed income tax (non-filers), and this proposed plan has been communicated to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In addition to dispatching notices to non-filers, the FBR intends to implement various administrative measures and has compiled data on the personal and business transactions of such individuals.

Sources from the FBR reveal that the first phase aims to bring one million people into the tax net, with a broader goal of incorporating 1.5 million individuals by 2024.

By June 30, 2024, the FBR aims to expand the tax net to encompass 6.5 million individuals.

Administrative measures, alongside notices to non-filers, will be instituted, and stringent actions will be taken to ensure compliance with tax laws.

The caretaker prime minister has endorsed these measures to enhance the tax net. According to FBR officials, 350,000 individuals filed tax returns in the current year.
