- Hundreds depart to join Mexico migrant caravan moving for US.
- The first caravan has grown to about 7,000 individuals.
- This smaller caravan intends to unite with a larger one.
A caravan comprising hundreds of migrants departed from the southern Mexican city of Tapachula, en route to the U.S. southern border on Sunday.
This smaller caravan intends to unite with a larger one that commenced its journey six days ago and is currently halted approximately 25 miles (40 km) to the north in the town of Huixtla.
According to organizers, the first caravan has grown to about 7,000 individuals, while the government in the southern Chiapas state estimates the group’s size at 3,500 people.
These migrants are predominantly fleeing poverty and political instability in their home countries, which include Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Venezuela.
One member of the caravan, Selma Alvarez from Venezuela, expressed her frustration with the 3.4-month waiting period for obtaining a humanitarian visa to travel through Mexican territory.
She highlighted the dangers posed by coyotes and criminals, emphasizing the perceived safety of traveling together in the caravan.
Alvarez further emphasized the group’s impatience to reach the U.S. border and initiate the process of entering the United States, including securing appointments through the U.S. government’s CBP One app to request asylum.
U.S. President Joe Biden, who is seeking reelection in the next year, faces mounting pressure to reduce the number of individuals crossing into the United States illegally from Mexico.
This year has witnessed a record number of people crossing through the challenging Darien Gap region that connects Panama and Colombia.
