- Boko Haram kills over 37 in Nigeria’s Yobe state.
- Boko Haram is a terrorist organization based in Nigeria.
- A large portion of Borno is still deemed too risky to access by car.
Over 20 mourners who were returning from the burial of jihadists’ previous victims in northeastern Nigeria were slaughtered by the militant Islamist group Boko Haram.
The mourners perished when their car ran over an explosive that the rebels in Yobe State had set. 17 individuals were shot dead by the terrorists during a raid on Gurokayeya village on Monday.
According to police, Boko Haram planned the attacks because the locals refused to pay a harvest tax.
The militants have often been charged with using the people of northeastern Nigeria as a means of extortion to finance their activities and maintain control over local areas.
Idris Geidam said, “This is one of the most horrific attacks by Boko Haram in recent times. For a burial group to be attacked shortly after the loss of their loved ones is beyond horrific.”
According to Yobe police spokesman Dungus Abdulkarim, ten of the burial group’s members passed away immediately, while ten more perished after being taken to a medical facility for treatment.
Tuesday was the incidental day, following the fatal raid on Gurokayeya village. These are the first significant attacks that Boko Haram has carried out in Yobe in almost a year.
Authorities in the state expressed suspicion that the militants had traveled from Borno state, which is nearby and has seen multiple attacks against civilians by Boko Haram this year.
A large portion of Borno, the home base of Boko Haram, is still deemed too risky to access by car.
Aid organizations claim that since the group’s 2009 insurgency began, more than two million people have been forced from their homes due to the fighting.
In addition, the militant group has expanded into the neighboring countries of Cameroon, Chad, and Niger, where government forces have been unable to stop them.
“Western education is forbidden” is what Boko Haram says, and it has consistently targeted secular schools in its quest to impose its brand of Islamic governance in the area.
When the organization abducted around 200 schoolgirls from the northeastern town of Chibok in 2014, it became well-known throughout the world.
