- Robert Card, Maine mass shooting suspect, found dead
- 18 killed, 13 injured in Lewiston shootings
- Card’s suicide note discovered, motive unclear
After the tragic mass shooting that claimed the lives of 18 people in the state of Maine, the suspect, Robert Card, a sergeant at a US Army Reserve base, has been discovered deceased.
A search for Card had been ongoing following two shooting incidents at a bowling alley and a restaurant in Lewiston, Maine, which resulted in 18 fatalities and 13 injuries on Wednesday night.
“Like many people, I am breathing a sigh of relief tonight, knowing that Robert Card is no longer a threat to anyone,” Maine Governor Janet Mills told a news conference on Friday.
Robert Card, aged 40, is believed to have ended his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to various media reports, citing law enforcement sources.
His body was discovered in the woods near the town of Lisbon, close to where his abandoned vehicle was found shortly after the tragic shootings.
Law enforcement officials revealed that a suicide note addressed to Card’s son was found, though it did not provide a clear motive for the shooting.
Card had a documented history of mental illness and had been committed to a psychiatric facility for a two-week period earlier in the year, as confirmed by law enforcement authorities.
Card, who enlisted in the military in 2002 but had not been deployed to a combat zone, had reported experiencing auditory hallucinations and had made threats related to a National Guard base, as indicated in a law enforcement bulletin issued after the shooting incidents.
The discovery of Card’s body marks the conclusion of a 48-hour manhunt that followed what is now considered the deadliest shooting in modern Maine history, a state with a relatively low population, situated in the northeastern United States within the New England region.
The victims of the Wednesday rampage, the most lethal episode of gun violence in the United States this year, ranged in age from 14 to 76 and included a father and son who were out for a night of bowling, as well as a sign language interpreter.
With a death toll surpassing any mass shooting since the Las Vegas massacre in 2017, where 60 people were killed at a crowded music festival, these events have sent shockwaves throughout the nation.
U.S. President Joe Biden, responding to the tragedy, condemned the attacks as “senseless and tragic” and reiterated his call to Congress to implement universal background checks and impose bans on so-called assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
