ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday termed professional tax levied by the cantonment board as illegal, Bol News reported.
Upholding the verdict of the Sindh High Court (SHC), the Supreme Court dismissed appeals of the Karachi Cantonment Board. The apex court also directed the board to return the taxes collected in the name of professional tax.
“Collection of taxes by the cantonment board is a negation of democracy and transparency. The land of cantonment has been granted to the armed forced for a specific reason,” Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa said.
He asked why shopping malls were being built in the cantonment areas. Nobody knew where commercial activities of cantonment ended, he said.
The chief justice said the state institutions should remain in their original boundaries. Hopefully, the other institutes would also follow suit, he said.
