One person dies in Netherlands due to an unusual summer storm

A rare summer storm with wind speeds of up to 145 kilometers (90 miles) per hour struck the Netherlands on Wednesday, resulting in at least one fatality and multiple injuries.

In Haarlem, a 51-year-old woman lost her life when a tree fell on the car she was in, according to the police. The storm caused significant disruption throughout the country, leading authorities to advise people to stay indoors and causing major travel disruptions.

The powerful winds caused numerous trees to topple, damaging cars and houseboats along Amsterdam’s canals.

The National Meteorology Institute issued a code red storm warning—the highest level—for residents of the Noord-Holland province, including Amsterdam. People were urged to remain at home and to use emergency service numbers only for life-threatening situations.

Named Poly, the storm is the most severe summer storm the Netherlands has experienced and the strongest overall since January 2018, according to weather agency Weeronline. Typically, heavy storms in the country occur between October and April, with the last significant summer storm taking place in 2015, the first in over a century.

The summer storm is causing extensive damage, as trees, laden with leaves, have become brittle during an unusually long dry spell in May and June.

Schiphol airport in Amsterdam, one of Europe’s busiest hubs, had to cancel over 400 flights, with limited air traffic expected until at least 4 pm local time (1400 GMT).

Train operators NS and Arriva suspended all services in the northern part of the country, and a highway north of Amsterdam was closed due to fallen trees.

The storm is projected to move eastward across the northern region of the Netherlands and is expected to weaken during the afternoon.
