Pakistani celebrities respond strongly to the PML-N senator’s statement about Mahira Khan, Anwar Maqsood

  • Netizens are criticising PML-N Senator Afnan Ullah Khan for his harsh remarks.
  • Khan made the inflammatory statements.
  • Mahira revealed her political allegiance to the “Pathan” community.

Netizens are criticising PML-N Senator Afnan Ullah Khan for his harsh remarks on celebrated playwright and satirist Anwar Maqsood and actor Mahira Khan.

Following Mahira’s declaration of support for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan at a Karachi event, Khan made the inflammatory statements. Mahira revealed her political allegiance to the “Pathan” community during a lighthearted talk about politics with the event’s moderator, Maqsood. Senator Khan apparently took offence to this and posted nasty and derogatory remarks about them on Twitter.

His tweet rapidly went viral on social media, and many Twitter users condemned him for his insulting and unsubstantiated remarks about two of Pakistan’s most well-known intellectuals and stars.

Farhan Saeed, Mira Sethi, Iffat Omer, Shafaat Ali, Adnan Siddiqui, and many other actors have spoken out against the senator’s offensive remarks.

Farhan tweeted: “This is the mentality that doesn’t let #Pakistan grow, this is what they do when someone just gives an opinion or has a political preference. They get personal so people stop giving their opinion. Senator? Zuban jahilon wali.”

Actor and writer Mira Sethi added her contribution to the discussion, saying that Senator Afnan Ullah Khan’s tweet was more a reflection of who he is as a person than it was of anything else.

A well-known actor Adnan Siddiqui used Twitter to express his disapproval of the “disgraceful behaviour” displayed by a public figure.

“Political criticism must not lead to character assassination,” wrote actor Iffat Omar.

The PML-N leader was also criticised by actor Mishi Khan for being “rude and crude.”

Veteran performer Atiqa Odho praised “two of [her] favourite people,” Anwar Maqsood and Mahira Khan, in an Instagram post. She called them “national treasures” with unmatched talent and devotion to their trade. Odho continued by denouncing the senator’s disparaging remarks and requesting that the PMLN party take action against him, such as expelling him and requiring a public apology. She highlighted that in a genuine democracy, such conduct should not be tolerated and that people have a right to voice their thoughts without fear of reprisal.
