NEW YORK: The United Nations has expressed concerns over the attack on the residence of PTI Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan in Lahore.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric issued a statement on the political environment and tension in Pakistan.

“We are aware of the raid on the house of former Prime Minister Imran Khan,” he said, adding that the tension has decreased in the past few hours.

The spokesperson said the United Nations believes in peaceful protests. He said the right to peaceful protests should be allowed in Pakistan as well.

Global human rights organization Amnesty International also expressed concern about the situation in Lahore outside Imran Khan’s residence.

“Amnesty International is concerned about the volatile situation in Lahore and urges authorities to maintain law and order within the remits of what is legal, necessary and proportionate under international human rights,” it said in a tweet.

“We call on authorities to exercise restraint and to ensure their response at all times is in accordance with international human rights law standards,” it added.
