King Charles praised for awarding younger brother royal title

  • King Charles bestowed title of Duke of Edinburgh on his younger brother.
  • King Charles fulfilled wishes of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.
  • James will become Lord of Wessex, and Sophie Duchess of Edinburgh.

Britain’s King Charles III bestowed the title of Duke of Edinburgh on his younger brother Edward on Friday, fulfilling the intentions of the late Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip.

Philip, the last bearer of the title, had always wanted Edward to inherit it.

Thousands of royal enthusiasts applauded the monarch for honouring Prince Philip’s desire.

On his 59th birthday, Charles bestowed the title on Edward, who is now known as the Earl of Wessex.

“His Majesty The King has been pleased to confer the Dukedom of Edinburgh upon the Prince Edward,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

But, Edward’s adolescent son James will not inherit the title. Instead, the 15-year-old will become the next Lord of Wessex.

Sophie, Edward’s wife who was very close to Elizabeth and died in September, will now be recognised as the Duchess of Edinburgh.
