MULTAN: At least eight people drowned as a tractor-trolley carrying devotees to the shrine of Hazrat Sakhi Sarwar fell into the canal in district Dera Ghazi Khan.
After receiving reports, rescue teams from DG Khan, Rescue 1122 and Punjab Police reached the spot. Pakistan Army troops also assisted rescue civil administration in the operation with heavy machinery.
The devotees were on their way to the shrine of Hazrat Sakhi Sarwar when the accident occurred near the military cantonment in Thana Chote area.
As a result, eight people drowned after falling in the canal. Rescue officials said several others, including women and children, are still missing.
At least 27 people were rescued from the canal while five bodies have been recovered Research officials are still searching for the missing persons. There were at least 35 people in the tractor-trolley.
Additional Chief Secretary South Punjab Captain R. Saqib Zafar expressed deep regret over the accident. He expressed grief over the loss of precious lives and offered condolences to the bereaved families.
He directed the DG Khan administration to speed up the rescue operation. He also summoned a report into the accident.
