  • She played an important role in inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
  • She was a dominant force with bat and ball throughout competition.

Grace Scrivens of England was named the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s Player of the Month for January 2023 on Monday.

After playing an important role in the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, Scrivens became the youngest player to win the ICC Women’s Player of the Month title. She was a dominant force with the bat and the ball throughout the competition, and her all-around efforts helped her win the Player of the Competition award. Similarly, England’s captain was outstanding in her leadership capacity as she guided her team to the first Final.

Following a worldwide vote among media representatives, members of the ICC Hall of Fame, former international players, and fans registered at ICC-cricket.com, the gifted kid was declared the winner.

The ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup saw a number of superstars break through to the international arena, but Scrivens stood out throughout a month in which she excelled as an English captain, bowler, batter, and leader on the team’s path to the Final.

The 19-year-old, who captained her team in seven games, had great success in the middle, collecting 293 runs at an average of 41.85, including three consecutive half-centuries in wins over Rwanda, Ireland, and the West Indies. In addition to her illustrious batting performances, Scrivens claimed nine crucial wickets at a fantastic average of 7.11 during the competition, including the decisive one that allowed England to go to the Final in the nail-biting semi-final triumph over Australia by three runs.

The England starlet defeats fellow Australian nominees Phoebe Litchfield and Beth Mooney, who both excelled in the shorter formats during January, to become the third winner from England in as many months, following in the footsteps of Jos Buttler and Harry Brook, who won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month awards in November and December, respectively.

Reacting to the ICC Women’s Player of the Month prize, Scrivens commented: “I am so happy and amazed to have been voted the ICC Women’s Player of the Month. It was a brilliant tournament and one that we really enjoyed. Women’s cricket is in a really exciting place at the minute and it’s just great to be a part of it.”

Former England international and ICC Player of the Month voting panel member Lydia Greenway added,

“Grace was instrumental in ensuring England had a successful campaign at the recent ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup. Although they missed out to India in the Final, Grace was a true leader throughout, whilst also picking up Player of the Tournament. She was a joy to watch at such a young age.”
