• PTA blocked Wikipedia over blasphemous content
• The platform is being blocked for 48 hours
• Restoration would subject to removal of unlawful content

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked the services of Wikipedia in the country over blasphemous content.

The PTA said in a statement that the website failed to remove the blasphemous content. It also said that Wikipedia was approached over the content by issuing a notice under applicable law and court order(s).

“The platform neither complied by removing the blasphemous content nor appeared before the Authority,” PTI added.

PTA degraded Wikipedia services for 48 hours over not compliance in removing sacrilegious content.

“Given the intentional failure on part of the platform to comply with the directions of PTA, the services of Wikipedia have been degraded for 48 hours with the direction to block/remove the reported contents,” the telecom regulator added.

PTA also said that the restoration of the platform would be considered subjecting to the removal of the unlawful content.
