“It’s special” to have two black QBs at start of Super Bowl, says Patrick Mahomes

  • Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts will be the first Black quarterbacks to start a Super Bowl.
  • Only seven Black quarterbacks had ever started a game before this year.
  • Mahomes: “To have two Black quarterbacks starting in the Super Bowl, I think it’s special”.

Two Black quarterbacks will start this year’s Super Bowl, according to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, while Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts described it as a significant moment.

In Glendale, Arizona, later this month, Mahomes, who won with the Chiefs in 2020, will compete against Hurts for the Lombardi Trophy. As soon as they take the field, the two will make history.

According to Mahomes, who is largely regarded as the favorite to win this year’s league MVP award, “To have two Black quarterbacks starting in the Super Bowl, I think it’s special,” he told reporters on Thursday.

He cited Doug Williams, the first Black quarterback to start a Super Bowl, and Donovan McNabb, a six-time Pro Bowler, as among of his role models.

“I’ve learned more and more about the history of the Black quarterback since I’ve been in this league,” said Mahomes.

“The guys that came before me … (gave) guys like me and Jalen chances to have this platform and have this spot on an NFL team.”

Despite making up the majority of the league, only seven Black quarterbacks have ever started a Super Bowl before this year.

“It’s come a long way,” Hurts told reporters. “To be the first for something is pretty cool, so I know it will be a good one.”
