Nazim Jokhio case: Notice issued seeking disqualification of MPA Jam Awais

  • Legal notice has been issued seeking disqualification of MPA Jam Awais
  • Sindh Assembly Speaker has been urged to file a reference in ECP
  • Jam Awais was acquitted in the Nazim Jokhio murder case

A legal notice has been sent to Speaker Sindh Assembly to disqualify PPP MPA Jam Awais Bijar for his involvement in the Nazim Jokhio murder case.

The legal notice said that Jam Awais is ineligible from being a Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) and a reference should be sent to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to disqualify him.

The legal notice has been sent by Sindh High Court Advocate Ali Tahir to Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani.

The legal notice said Jam Awais paid ‘diyat’ to the heirs of Nazim Jokhio for his murder and is no longer ‘Sadiq’ and ‘Amin’ (honest the trustworthy), Therefore, he should be disqualified under Article 62(1)f of the Constitution of Pakistan.

Jam Owais was elected MPA Sindh Assembly from PS-79 Thatta. The legal notice said the proceedings to file a reference against Jam Awais should be taken within 14 days.

It said the Supreme Court of Pakistan will be approached in the action is not taken.  A copy of the legal notice has also been sent to DG Human Rights Cell, Supreme Court, ECP, and Jam Awais.

Earlier this month, a local court in Karachi acquitted three accused including Sindh Assembly MPA Jam Awais in the Nazim Jokhio murder case.

The additional district and session court Malir announced the verdict on the applications of reconciliation between the victim’s family and the accused. The court rejected the application of reconciliation of two others who had been accused of kidnapping the victim.

Those who have been acquitted are Jam Awais, Mairaj Jokhio, Ahmad Khan, Doda Khan, and Muhammad Soomar. However, Doda Khan and Soomar will be facing charges in a kidnapping case.

Nazim Jokhio was tortured and murdered in November 2021. The local police had quashed a case against MNA Jam Karim after having incomplete evidence against him.
