SC irked over delay in appointment of AGP

  • SC questioned the delay in appointment of AGP
  • The court instructed the federal govt to appoint AGP
  • It also said that the government is violating court orders

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on Monday questioned the appointment of the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) and expressed fury over the delay in appointment.

While conducting a hearing, Justice Qazi Faez Isa inquired who the attorney general in the country is right now.

To which the deputy attorney general had no satisfactory reply and the court remarked that the government is so incompetent that it cannot even appoint an attorney general.

Justice Faez also inquired if the government is deliberating over the appointment. “The Supreme Court has 5,500 lawyers but the government cannot find a single one,” he added.

He also made it clear that the government is violating the Constitution by not appointing the AGP and ignoring the apex court orders.

The court maintained that the additional attorney general and the deputy attorney general are bound to take instructions from the AGP only.

“It is against the law for the deputy and additional attorney general to appear without instructions of the AGP,” the court added.

The apex court instructed the federal government to fill the constitutional post.
