LAHORE: The PML-N has sent the names for the Parliamentary Committee on the Caretaker Chief Minister to the Speaker Punjab Assembly.
The party has nominated Malik Ahmad Khan, Hasan Murtaza and Nadeem Kamran to the parliamentary committee to decide on the nomination of the party chairman.
The government has nominated Mian Aslam Iqbal, Raja Basharat, and Makdoom Hashim for the committee. However, the committee has not yet held any consultation over the appointment of the interim set-up in the province.
Speaker Punjab Assembly Sibtain Khan earlier said that the opposition has not submitted its nominations for the committee. He eventually even the assembly after the names were not received.
He said the committee will be notified when the names are received. He hoped that political leaders will resolve the matter in an amicable way. He said the nomination for the caretaker chief minister cannot be changed after being announced by the committee.
Regarding the acceptance of PTI MNAs resignations from the National Assembly, Sibtain said the speaker had decided to verify the resignations individually but then suddenly accepted the resignation of 35 members.
“Speaker of National Assembly is acting like a Mughal Emperor. He does as he pleases,” he said, adding that he foresees elections being held at the end of May.
The issue of the nomination of the caretaker chief minister of Punjab has been sent to the parliamentary committee after the chief minister and leader of opposition failed to reach a consensus.
Governor Punjab Baligh-ur-Rehman wrote a letter to the Speaker Punjab Assembly for constitution of a parliamentary committee for the nomination of the caretaker chief minister.
Following the dissolution of the Punjab Assembly, the government and opposition leaders expedited consultations for a caretaker set-up in the province.
Speaker provincial assembly will form a six-member committee, comprises of three members each from the government and the opposition to decide on the interim chief minister.
If the parliamentary committee fails to come with a name for the post, the matter will be sent to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) which will pick one of the recommended names.
Before the 2018 general elections, the opposition and the government was unable to strike a consensus over the name for the caretaker chief minister of Pakistan The electoral had nominated Prof. Hassan Askari to lead the caretaker setup in the province.
