- It is being followed by a close contest between PPP and PTI
KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has claimed that his party had “swept” the second phase of Local Government (LG) elections.
“PPP sweeps second phase of local bodies election,” he said on Twitter, as the result began to pour in after the polls were held in Karachi and Hyderabad Division.
According to unofficial results, the PPP is in a leading position in Karachi and Hyderabad. It is being followed by a close contest between the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
In Malir district of Karachi, the PPP started celebrating over the victory. They raised slogans in favour of the party despite the final results not being announced.

The polling process was otherwise uneventful, except for minor clashes reported at several polling stations. The turnout was low to extreme winter and uncertainty over the polls.
Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja congratulated the provincial government, law enforcement agencies, interior ministry, and Pakistan Army for cooperating with the election staff.
Sindh Inspector General Ghulam Nabi Memon appreciated the performance of the Police, Rangers and other law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace during the polls.
