Ravichandran Ashwin wants the 2023 World Cup to start at 11.30am. India’s offspinner argues that dew offers chasing teams an unfair edge. Day-night ODIs in India typically start at 1.30pm and last far into primetime broadcast hours.

Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s offspinner, wants the future ODI World Cup, which will be held in India in October-November 2023, to start at 11.30am – a full two hours earlier than the typical start time for day-night ODI games in India.

Ashwin used the example of India’s first ODI against Sri Lanka in Guwahati in a video on his YouTube channel to argue that dew offers chasing teams an unfair edge. India batted with deliberate urgency, keeping the dew issue in mind, and scored 373 runs. They finally won by 67 runs, but Ashwin believed this did not reflect their domination on the day.

“On a slow track, India batted superbly and scored well above par. “They still had to fight tooth and nail to win,” he remarked. “The quality differential between the teams isn’t coming through – dew is decreasing that margin if you chance to lose the toss.

“My proposal – or rather, my perspective – for the World Cup is to look at what places and times we are playing in. Why shouldn’t World Cup matches begin at 11.30 a.m.?”

Day-night ODIs in India typically start at 1.30pm and last far into primetime broadcast hours. While starting matches early may result in more even battles, broadcasters may be opposed to such a move due to the danger of lower audience figures. Fans, according to Ashwin, will tune in to watch World Cup matches regardless of the time.

“People will point to television viewers and broadcasters and claim that people will not tune in and watch at that time, but would they not tune in and watch World Cup matches?” He inquired. “The recent T20 World Cup was similarly hosted in winter, prioritizing the summer [for Australia’s home bilateral season]. It wasn’t the best situation because T20 is a fast-paced game that can’t be played in the winter. People would argue that this is not the case in Australia, but we must priorities World Cups.
