Manchester City of the Premier League has released a statement in response to the Benjamin Mendy trial result.

The French defender was found not guilty of sex attacks on four women after a six-month trial, while the jury was deadlocked on two additional cases.

“Manchester City FC notes the verdict from Chester Crown Court today, where a jury has found Benjamin Mendy not guilty of seven charges. The jury is hung on two charges and the trial is now over,” a statement added shortly after.

“Given there are open matters related to this case, the Club is not in a position to comment further at this time.”

On Wednesday, the seven men and four women who made up the jury reached a unanimous decision; one juror was let go early for medical reasons.

The judge gave the jury a majority direction, meaning he would accept a judgement of 10-1 if reached after they had finished deliberating the final two counts.

After 14 days of deliberation, the jury was unable to reach a decision regarding Mendy’s alleged attempted rape of a woman, 29, in 2018 and rape of a second woman, 24, in October 2020. On those unresolved counts, a decision on retrial is still pending.

In August 2021, against Tottenham Hotspur, Mendy made his final appearance for City. Later that month, following his arrest, the Premier League team suspended him.

The France international moved from AS Monaco of Ligue 1 to City in 2017 for an estimated $63.29 million.
